Upgraded the cockpit speakers to Eclipse 6X9 4ways and have a JL 500 amp itchin to get put in for the sub(s) planned under the back seat. It is tall enough for a 12" sub and deep enough for a proper enclosure.
Question is: With the type of 6X9's I have will two 10" subs be better off than one 12" or vice versa and why?

If you have the room, I would go with 2 12's. The twelves will hit lower frequencies and with more cone area produce more sound. I lnpw you have room somewhere in that boat for two 12's ;) How do you like the Eclipse 6x9s?

The Eclipse's were really a big step up - thanks for the plan. I am running the amp too hot now so that looks like I'll need to upgrade it later :D
I am concerned that I may overpower the upper end with two 12's. Am I unlearned here or what? I also don't want to rattle loose any screws either J/K

I am running for Eclipse 6x9s (the same ones you have) and two 12's in my little 18ft boat and it does not overpower the high end. In a boat you can never have too much. And you can always turn too much down but you can never turn not enough up.

The F3(Frequency response @ -3db) between 10" and 12" subwoofers within most model lines(10w3 vs 12w3)normally isn't but a 1 or 2 hz difference, and a vented enclosure can be designed to hit almost any frequency you want... no real reason to go below 38hz anyway... Like Bill said, the benefit is greater output because of cone area. I think you'd be happy with the 2 12's. Although, Mandelon has 2 downfiring 10w0's that pound pretty hard off a JL2501. Heard a few notes from it last night and walked away pretty impressed.
Knowing what kind of performance you expect from the sub(s) ahead of time is helpful, but RUNNING IT HARD like RB said is always a safe bet... :D

My prescription: Two 12's....big enclosure's...and lots of clean class D power...

for somthing simple you can just take the dimensions of you seat box and then re-build it with two ported chambers on the sides and use the center for storage or you could get trick and build a type of bandpass enclosure and get a little more output out of it just depends on the power you are gonna run????

Ported or downfiring yes, but a 4th order bandpass enclosure is not condusive to being in a boat. Plus you're talking about him finding a driver that will work, and him doing a bunch of math in order to get it correct.
I know of a few downfiring applications that work really well ;)

I can verify that. :mix:

I hear ya on the leg work end of it ...I have done a couple of band pass enclosure's in boats that would impress the best of them. We did a 22' bowrider with a pair of 12" one on each side in front of your feet that sounded like it had at least 4 12"'s in it. my first HTM had 6 12"'s in a band pass enclosure and it would flat knock your d**k in the dirt :D

yea it was the first 24' (all white) with a wooden floor so we built the seat base and had designer build the back seat 2" shorter than normal I have pic's somewhere that was awhile ago 98' I had three xtant 1000D's on the subs it got it pretty good just wasnt very good for the top end speed  thats when we first started using oddesey batteries
