yes,
I am a northwest guy, my dad rigged several Schiada flatbottoms in that era. He did the SK-4 Tweetie Pie boat and K-51 Puppy Chow. both ran in about the same time as Krazy Konaca ran super stock. Don went on to hold the compition record for K-boats at about 104mph, that is flyin in these little boats.

No thats not the Green Dragon. If I remember right ( the pic wasn't marked ), I think my dad said that it's one of Don Dues later rides. I do remember the Green Dragon boat though. Saw it flip at Lake Samamish in the 70's. I seem to remember it being white with a dragon going down the sides.

Holy shit...we never got the full story on Chuck's accident. He was my dad's best friend. He a call about 2am one night from another friend saying he had heard on the radio that he was killed. Said he broke the motor, prop locked and boat crashed. It was his first ride/run in blown fuel. Dad was crushed and pale for days afterwards. Chuck was a character and as a teenager I idolized him (Mom wasn't to happy about that). Thanks for the pic, will print this thread and pass it on to my folks. What was the date on the article?

Boater Bill or superlite. Do you remember Citation 1 & 2 owned and driven by Renee' Andre' (Maddox). The motor that put Renee upside down also put Ray Caselli and Panic mouse in the weeds and beyond. Or the Mortician with inline small blocks that was towed by a hearse. I think he was killed at parris. The 60's and 70's had some colerful drivers in a very dangerous sport with very little payback except bragging rights.

Everyone - great pics, they bring back fond memories and I remember most of the boats shown/mentioned. Panic Mouse always kicked butt, I saw (I think) the first 200mph run in drag boats by Mr. Ed. This was a charger hull also I believe. Conquest, Citation, and the others I remember also. Thunder you're right, back then they ran for nuthin' but braggin rights basicly. I remember once at Long Beach these BFH guys we were hanging with were po'd that they had lost on a red light in eliminations and there was a lot of talk flying. A grudge match was set up (money on the line) and these guys went out and fireballed the motor but drove it through the lights and beat em! They were so jazzed, didn't care that they probably spent 5 X the $ they won on the bet. Whens the last time you saw a grudge match? Good times!

Hey Superdave,
Ask 72superlite to tell the story of how he got Dads boat back. Turns out it was about 5 miles from where are Dad put it together. The guy that had it swore up and down that the hull was a 76 or newer. What he didnt know was we recognized Dads fabricated aluminum pieces, still in the boat, and we had the serial number to compare. After so dickering about the price. The guy agreed to sell. What was really cool was when Dad saw the boat again after nearly 30 years. Oooops I told the story..

Boater Bill, You're right about the grudge matches. And as I remember, any Boat that raced that day could challenge the top fuel boat and if you couldn't make it to the line or broke going down the strip you lose.
Is that still in the rules? When Renee won the top fuel race he got 300.00$. And by the time we got home it was spent

Really enjoying the pictures and the stories.
Like I've said eariler, where I grew up, six doors down lived Howard Brown for a few years. His shop wasn't to far down Lakewood Blvd. in Paramount. Anyway, when I was working for Howard boats years later after he sold to Willen, he would still come around the shop to collect his check, as he was carring paper on the deal. He would tell some stories if you caught him in a good mood and the one I remember the most was when he started losing his buddies, crashing the shovel nose hydro. Motors were getting more and more powerful and the speeds got greater than the Hydro could handle. I don't recall which death was the last straw, but one day he pushed the molds out in the center of the parking lot, squirted lighter fluid over it and burnt it to the ground. Had to be hell to have so many friends die in his boats.

From what I have found,Crisis BFH, driven by Gary Gabelich was the first to 200mph. It happened in Perris in '69. It may not have been an official record( not backed up ) I don't know. 200 mph in '69 wasn't that far off, Climax BFH driven by Larry Schwabenland was the APBA-UIM world record holder in June of '68, with a 190.27 mph

Smoke on the Water was not the first boat to break 200mph. It did break the then current record of 202 with a 203 mph pass with Sam Kurtovich driving at Long Beach. Sonny Jones was the original driver, but had crashed the smoke boat at Bakersfield a month or so before and ended up with a brokem arm and some bruises. I have the world record pass on 8mm film. I was just a kid on the pit crew for the boat and several others that Irv Brendel had. Frank Dade also went on to drive the boat later. I have some original photos hanging in my garage I will try to scan and put up here.

Gary Gabelich WAS the first 200 mph pass at Perris CA in 1969 in the CRISIS BFH. If I recall correctly, he was later killed about 1 year later in Oregon in the same boat. This same Gary Gabelich also drove AA Fuel Dragsters in the 60's.

Well I might as well add my 2 cents... Gary Gabelich was not killed in the Crisis boat. He went on to set the land speed record driving the famous "Blue Flame" rocket car. Not sure what year but he went 622 mph to break Craig Breedlove's record and held the record for several years until the the guys from England broke it... Gary made 38 passes at over 600 mph in the Blue Flame! Later Gary was was almost killed in Orange County testing a front wheel drive funny car. Tragically, Gary was killed in a motorcycle street accident about 10 years ago. Gary's trademark when he drove dragboats was the big feather plume he wore on his helmet. (See below) I never met Gary but I know some of his friends and by all accounts he was a wildman...

You are correct, It was Lee Taylor driving the jet boat called "Hustler" designed and built by Rich Hallett. Lee was critically injured in the boat in 1964 on Havasu during a test outing. I have some pictures of that wreck I'll try to scan and post.

Stabber,
I have a pretty good article somewhere about that boat , the Hustler, when it was new. Beautiful boat. I think it was sponsered by Renoylds alum. or some company like that. This was about 63 or 64.
But what was the boat he was driving later and killed in at Tahoe? I don't think it was the same Hustler as that one.
I met Taylor some time around '73. My dads friend, Jimmy Jines, had a paint shop in Bellflower called California Customs back then, and he painted one of Taylor's cars. He called us up to come over and meet him cause he knew we liked boats and my dad also knew Hallett (slightly). Taylor was scared from the results of a former crash, must be the one you mentioned, and he might have even had a glass eye. I'm just guessing, but one of his eye sockets was really messed up.
Jines also painted Linda Lovelace's car once, both cars, hers and Taylors were VW's oddly enough, around that same time and he called for me to come over to meet her as well. I know that it's got nothing to do with boats, but it was pretty cool. He called just about every guy he knew to come on over when it was time for her to pick up her car. Shop was full of guys just hanging around. Kinda funny looking back on it.

spectras only
12-26-2001, 08:03 PM
0-R ,I'm positive ,Taylor's boat was a brand new boat, designed especially to beat Warby's record. It was like a cigarette with sponsons,[3 point hydro style].When I saw the boat before the record runs,I seriously thought he's going to have problem with it ,unless the water was like a mirror.I'm going to try to dig up an article on Lee Mizer's rocket powered boat ,which he hasn't run ,probably due to the shape of the boat[like a small spaceshuttle with a joystick rather than a rudder].That boat was calculated being capable of upward to 500 MPH ,hence the vertical stabilizer and joystick to fly the sucker above the water surface.I'm affraid Craig Breedlove's dream is shattered by Noble, and he might be the next casuality to try to beat Noble's record.

Wow, Linda Lovelace! That was the first XXX movie I ever saw (Deep Throat). I think I was a senior in high school and we had to go to San Francisco to some seedy theater in the tenderloin district. All I remember is that it was creepy and my feet kept sticking to the floor. Must have been from people spilling their cokes... I think PeeWee Herman was sitting behind me.
Anyway, here is a couple of shots of the original Hustler when it crashed at Havasu in April of 1964. Lee was severly injured in this wreck.

Spectra, if it was the first on land, it would probably be Campbell in the Bluebird, don't have a clue to the engine but being he was from England, maybe a Rolls, like the p-51 airplane used.
If you are asking about the 1/4 mile, my guess would be Don Garlits in the Swamp Rat, Hemi power, late 50's or early 60's

sorry not being specific ie; dragboats/cars,here it is. http://www3.telus.net/spectrasonly/eddyhilldragster.jpg Remember Hill held the record on water for a long time at about 229MPH.Also remember him stating the fact dragboat racing is more dangerous than dragcar racing, the reason he went back to cars.

The old Sleekcraft ad brought back some memories. My first boat, I drove from Houston out to LA in 1980 to pick it up from the factory.

Found some of the boat stuff I was looking for:
In 1941 John Cobb went just over 200 in a boat but was killed on the return run, so no record was set.
1955, Don Campbell went 202.32, a new record.
Roy Duby went 200.419 in '62 in a Unlimited Hydro, the first prop driven boat to go over 200.
Lee Taylor went 250 in 1964 at Lake Havasu, but crashed the 'Hustler" . No record.
In 1968 he went 255, this time setting a new record.
In 1980, driving US Discovery II, he went 269.85 in Lake Tahoe but was killed in another run before he got the record.
Almost forgot....HAPPY NEW YEAR

Spectras only,
I can't figure out who was the first to go 200 on land but I know the land speed record in 1933 was already 203. Frank Lockhart was trying to break the record at Daytona Beach (in a Stutz powered car) when he crashed his car for the second time. The first time he crashed he was going 220, he was slightly injured. He rebuilt the car and was killed when he crashed it the second time at over 200mph in April of 1934.
John Cobb set the land speed record in 1934 at 352 mph. A few hours later another guy, Captain G.E.T. Eyston, went 357 and set a new record. Talk about ruining your day!

Old Rigger, thanks for the info, I remembered that the 200 mph mark was done very early in the automotive age, and also that Daytona was the destination of a lot of early speed guru's.

OR, my unspecific quiz http://free.***boat.net/ubb/eek.gif was about 1/4 miles time ,since most of the posting [old pics]was about that.We have a friend in england who is an engineer and was involved building the Bluebird [?],when we went to Beauliu [sp]where Bluebird resides ,he pointed out, that did the first legit landspeed record at 200. http://www3.telus.net/spectrasonly/bluebird.jpg

Spectras only,
Yeah, I knew you were talking about the 1/4 mile records. I just thought I'd throw in some completly usless info about land speed stuff. Great pic by the way.
I don't know about the first "legit" thing. All the records set here in the states back in the early days, teens, 20's and 30's were set under the supervision of the American Automobile Association (AAA) and are official records. Anyway, I know your friend is much more knowledgable on the subject than me. I just like reading about the stuff, boats and cars.
It's always interesting to compare the American boats and cars to the English one's too. Always thought the English boats looked so bulky and odd, but they sure hauled ass.
More usless stuff....In 1927 the English had the land record at 174 mph. Done with a car with a huge 1,360 ci engine. When Lockhart went after the record here in Ca., in the same year at Muroc dry lake, he ran 171 mph. Not quite enough to get the record. In his car he ran a 91 ci supercharged Miller, giving up over 1,100 cubic inches to his rival. Of course Miller later was known as Offenhauser.
Useless, useless stuff.........

Hey OR, that's not useless stuff, it's good reading. You're right about the english hardware [always homely looking http://free.***boat.net/ubb/wink.gif].Campbell's boats looked bulky too.I'm not in defence of the limey blokes, but their bulky machine sure beat the previous landspeed record.Maybe Craig Breedlove shouldn't focus on beautifully slimlined single engined crafts http://free.***boat.net/ubb/wink.gif

OK, this topic has gone way too far down the topic list. I guess its time to fire up the scanner again. I'm running low on the old stuff, so maybe I'll start with my Red Bluff pics. Heres what happens when the motor seizes and you don't have a whirlaway.

Thought we already settled this. Gary Gabelich In the Sanger BFH Crisis made the first 200mph pass. It was at Perris Ca., and I believe it was in the last session on Saturday afternoon. Like Sept. 13 1969 if I remember correctly. Don't think it was backed up, but it was the first. My dad was there, didn't see the pass, he was on the other side of the berm working on his boat. He told me he heard the boat make a strong pass, then heard the crowd go wild. He scurried up the berm and saw the history making numbers on the scoreboard. http://free.***boat.net/ubb/wink.gif

72, Yes we settled it, Gabelich DID run the first over 200 mph pass at SkiLand. Larry Hill in Mr. Ed However held the first over 200mph record in NDBA and this record stood for some 5 years. BTW in 1969 I was i year old so I don't remember, and I wasn't there. I was at home about 45 minutes away in Upland tucked in my crib with a teddy bear. PS IronAss, I believe it was 1970 at Marine Stadium.

Anybody recognize this boat from the early to mid 70's. This was taken at Spanaway Lake, in Tacoma, Wa. I guess the other pics don't come up because of the address change at webshots. Lets see if this works.
