Thunder..Wilder,
Tom Tate was Caselli's crew chief. His motors were built by a guy named Zuess or Zuezl or Zhuez....something like that. It started with a Z. I should know that bit of trivia, but three days at work gets short on sleep and shorter on memory.

Hey guy's, the engine builder your lookin' for is Dave Zuechel. I was aquainted with Dave in my early days of drag racin' out at Skiland in Perris and the Stadium (Oakland and L.B.) "Zuech" was from the S.F.Valley and did some very famous ol drag boats besides Caselli's. He did the motor in "CITATION", the TFH that Don Pruhdome drove and ultimatly destroyed at the Stadium. Dave was a great guy and really knew his stuff especially the 392 Chryslers that ruled the fuel catigories in the "good ol days". Dave was big time into aircraft engines and planes in general, he was killed in an airplane accident in the late 70's or early 80's as I try to remember the dates. Too good of guy to loose so early in his life, we all were shorted by his passing.

I do remember after the Casseli crash he said he would not build anymore boat motors, infact I think it was Andree's motor in Rays boat, don't know for sure.

And I remember when they used to stage the boats in the boat slip area inside the Island. The burnouts leaving the island were the best! Thanks again.

Awesome pictures guys, love em. Especially the shot of "Trogan Ghost" . Anybody remember who drove it? Also was wondering which boat and who the driver was of the flat. that pitched the driver out and was obviously still running and ran into the christmas tree. I remember that also happening to Clive Hughes, or it may have even been Bob Dice, but it was in "My Boat II", He got pitched out and ,I beleive he received a broken leg. Meanwhile the kill switch failed, boat kept idleing in a circle around the driver, finally a N.D.B.A. rescue boat rammed the errant blown alcohol flat. and were able to get to the driver. Come to think of it, it might have even been Sonny Jones, can't remember.........somebody help!!!!

Funnycarmike, the driver of the Trojan Ghost in that pic was Jerry "the hammer" Hanks. He would later drive for Jim Cole in the Spooky boat BFF until the class was retired due to the danger and $$$$$ it took to run this class. I think the year was 1982 when the class went away.

funnycarmike
01-21-2005, 01:18 PM
Thanks, Just-Jettin. Cool to know that was Jerry Hanks. I only knew of him driving "Spooky". I remember Jerry being kind of a liitle guy, must be the angle, He looks bigger in that "Trogan Ghost" pic. I always thought he was one of the most talented to ever "shoe" a Blown Fuel Flat.

Just-Jettin
01-21-2005, 02:48 PM
Mike, the Jerry Hanks I remember was over 6ft, infact he was even taller than Bob Dice. Last I hear Jerry is in Bullhead city still swinging a hammer as a framer, hince the nickname the hammer. But you are correct he could drive the crap out of a BFF. Miss watching that class more than any other coming out of the marina at Ming going to the holding rope. Those dudes were studs.

Mike, Vern's BFF was the Flower Power and i believe it was 069.
Cyde Parkhurst or Jack Cool has a picture of Ray Caselli and Vern running at Oakland and both of them crashing at the same time.
In answer to the first BFH to run in the excess of 200+ mpm was the Crisis boat driven by Gary Gabelich at Skiland

I do not hang on to much but as posted before that autograph is framed and hanging above my desk . I never cared much for sports but always liked the drag boats , Ray was definetly my hero as a kid my schwinn was #007 lol etc . One of the worst days of my life was the day he was killed . For years after i got the autograph he rememberd me and would say hey . I had a wood flatbottom panic mouse with a model engine on a stick lol.

Hey Mike and Fastflat thanks for the post and pics. Fastflat is absoloutely right, Vern's BFF boats name was "flower power". Vern lived out his days in Livermore and I used to see him at a local burger place. I now remember him telling me the boats name was "flower power".
Vern got into riding and competing with cutting horses. From what I heard he had some really nice horses and was very successful. Vern was still a competitor until he passed away I'm sorry to say around the mid 90's from alzheimers. I remember eating whale burgers at the Oakland Estuary and looking at all of the photographs in the restaurant of Vern and the other racers crashing. Vern always took alot of pride in telling people that he won the world one year racing BFF...

:D So much for my memory as well, I thought I remembered Mr Ed being green. Must of been the envy.
Very cool thread, thanks for the blast from my past. I recall staring at that boat for hours at the boat show. And oh yeah I almost forgot, Roman your a putz and V-drive video your cards are done.
:D
Steve,
Gary Gabelich in "Crisis" was indeed first to 200 in august of 1969 but he didn't back it up. In september 69, Larry (not Eddie) Hill drove the Mr. Ed to 200 at long Beach and did back it up making the first official 200 mph record in the sport.

What was Eddie Hills record at Marine Stadium? It was Eddie´s first time on salt water. I was just a kid and remember the driver from Liberty say how he was going to show "This Texan" as he liked to refer to Eddie, how to run a drag boat on salt water...I remember everyone laughing their butts of when Eddie left him standing still !!!
I cant remember yesterday but, I remember that !!

I've got cartons of this old stuff, but every time I start to look thru it, I get stuck for days reading about some vintage boat rods.
lol, I bet you do. But I'm sure I'm not the only one that would love to see you keep that scanner warmmed up.
That pic is awasome!! Is that a Miller hydro?

It was a Hallett hydro. Citation II was the BFH record holder in 1966 at 172mph. Rene Maddox crashed it at Oroville in '66. I was 6 and saw it...we have it on home video...my mom was filming. Maddox was critically injured but recovered. His son is on the boards occasionally "Mudexpert." I contacted him and sent him a video of his dad...never did hear from him again.
It was one of the most beautiful boats I have ever seen.
