Anybody got some bad ass v-drives that want to start a "new topic"? Be pretty cool if we could get together and just shoot some v-drive bull!!!!

I'm running a 19 ft. Sanger flat with 25% gears and a Menkens 17 prop. I'm building a 540 tall deck Merlin II with Dart Pro 1 325cc heads and a 8-71 blower at 7% over. Closest guess to top speed wins a beer.

I'm gonna say, 120 mph. Close? I definately know that your boat should "get with the program" or somethings wrong! Are you in Detroit?

Jim, I think that you will need more gear with that 540". When I was racing I ran a blown injected 461" with an 8-71 @ 30% over and an 11X16 prop. I tried a lot of gears and with 25's it had the best e.t. but turned 8,800 rpm at the lights and 9,000+ out of the hole.
I have some 10 degree, 35% gears that might be a better place to start. I also have some 47's but you have to remove the water jackets in the v-drive to use them.

Hey guys.
Yep, I'm Motor City all the way. There are some real well known names working on engines around here. Dart and Jomar are just up the road, Shirley Muldowney and Connie Kallita still live around here. I got my heads from former Pro Stock driver Wally Booth, he just calls Dick Maskin at Dart and picks em up.
Dave, the bigger gears might be needed, sounds pretty scary though! I think a Chut jacket might be agood idea.
Jim.

That's not motor city! It's called HEAVEN! I'd be broke living near all those outfits! I'm in Maine, got snow yesterday. Gone already though, my hydro looks pitifull in a snow covered garage. Summer HAS to come, it has no choice! Sounds like you got yourself one hot ride. Do you ever race?

DetroitJim,
So what kind of heads are you running? What did this pro stock guy do to them?? I'm building a blown 573" and have a set of dart 360's that I'm using. I wore a chute jacket when I raced my flat. Even at the river. I also wore a pair of balistic shorts. Your a holes not water tight @ 130+.

i have a 72 hondo flat bottom. my first engine was a 468 chev with a tunnel ram and 2 four barrles with 12% over drive and a 11 by 15 prop. the boat was quick, top speed of probably 85 mph. over the winter, i built a 572 merlin chevorlet with a 671 kuhl super charger, with 5 to 7 pounds of boost. casale v drive with 40% over drive and a 11 1/2 by 16 steel prop. can anybody guess the top speed? im not sure. and most of all what im not sure of is how the boat will handle at top speed. i tested the boat two times at Lake Elsinore, CA, the water was not very flat. I am going to the river in September and I will get it on some nice flat water then. V drives are bad ass!

Before any estimate of speed we will need to know what rpm the engine will spin.

it runs 7000 rpm

I calculate a speed of 126.57 mph using a 15% slippage factor. This is just a mathamaticle calculated speed done from AzDon's speed calculator. It has not been backed up by radar or GPS.

Ok, I may be a bit out of my leauge in the presence of you guys, but I thought Id share. My old man built from the "skeleton" up a Mandela flat bottom back in, ohh, I think it was around 1962. He put in a 392 Hemi with a 6 pack of 2barrel Rochesters, bored 30 over. Originally, he had straight stacks comming off the heads, but the lake association where we kept the boat filed many a complaints with him, so now he is running Nicson Thru Hulls out the transom. The V-drive sits between the passenger and driver seats and if I recal is also a Nicson(and sounds o so sweat at an idle). The boats been dry docked for 10 years now as he started to refinish its paint job and retune the motor. The finish is finally complete, but hes still looking for some parts on the magneto, any clues of a good hemi site to find parts??
Im not sure wut kind of gears hes running in it,or wut pitch the prop is, but I know the thing moves like a rocket. He claims to be pushing out about 700hp running 100LL.
The boat is our families pride and joy(at least for me and my brother). It might be a little outdated compared to a lot of the stuff you guys push now adays, but there is a lot to be said about a boat like this being built in a time when a 100HP outboard was considered a technological marvel. If anyone would like to see some pics of it, I assure you you wont be disappointed, just email me at blizac@hotmail.com and Id be happy to send them to you!! Thanks

Dimarco. I think GS Marine now owns the Kurtis Craft molds and produces new boats. I think they are located in Corona CA. As for Greg Shoemaker.

Bliz, here a couple sources for magnetos/parts
www.huntmagnetos.com (http://www.huntmagnetos.com)
www.taylorvertex.com (http://www.taylorvertex.com)
Sounds like a pretty cool old v-drive.

I HAVE A 22' SCHIADA V-DRIVE WITH A TWIN TURBO LS7 29 GEARS ROSSI TURBO 400 TRANS AND 12X15 STAINLESS PROP.I AM CONSIDERING CHANGING GEARS TO PICK UP MORE SPEED AND A LOWER CRUSING RPM. WHAT DO YOU RECOMEND? I CURRENTLY SPIN 5800RPM AT APROX 90+MPH ANDI ALSO AM RUNNING A STOCK LS7 MANIFOLD WHAT DO YOU RECOMEND? THE BOAT CURRENTLY RUNS GREAT WILL MAKING THESE CHANGES MAKE BIG DIFFERENCE.

Schiada Jim, I have some 35% 10 deg gears for a quick change case. They are lightend also. I also make a top bearing puller that makes changing them a snap. Send me an e-mail to valveautomation1@earthlink.net for more info and a pic of them.
Hey, can you also send me a pic of your engine? I'm building a twin turbo set up for my 20' Schiada and would like to see some pics of other turbo deals.
Thanks, Dave
