I sheared the pin in my distributor today. The one on the lower gear. Is this common in a 460 with a high volume oil pump & 40 weight oil? The engine temp was around 160-210 (depending on if I was idleing for a long time or running faster) so I don't the oil was too cold or thick.
This is the second time this has happened to me on this motor. The first time was a couple years ago and with a different oil pump.
Thanks guys!

I run a Mallory distributor in my 460 v-drive flat. I used to break a pin every couple of months. The Mallory dist only uses a 1/8" pin. I found that if you use a double wall pin the problem seems solved. Other people have drilled out the pin to a larger size.

Thanks to all! It is a Mallory distributor! I'll look into your suggestions.

This will also happen on stock type rebuilt dist. The rebuilders usually use a std. soft roll pin and sometimes it will shear. Ford used a hardened pin.

also check the clearence of the dist gear to the boss on the block that guides the pump shaft

Be glad it was the pin and not the oil pump drive shaft. If the pin lets go the motor is killed. If the oil pump drive shaft lets go then it kills the crank, rods and so on.
I have run fords all my life and had very good luck with MSD. If your dist. has a small
pin a up grade is in order. Drill and install
a new pin. You may want to spin the oil pump
by hand with a old dist or socket on a long
ext. just to see if it is free or is binding
in some spot. Just my thoughts.

Yeah, I do want to do that!
77, none of my sockets will fit down in there, do you have anything that will fit down in the hole where the top of the oil pump shaft is?
Thanks,

RTJas, I've had this problem in my old F-350. I built a new motor with a high volume oil pump(thinking that was the thingy to do) and used the stock oil pan. The difference in pump height between stock and performance made the clearence between the pickup tube and oil pan too close putting extra drag on the rollpin. I put a stock replacement Mellings pump and use an extra quart of oil. That same engine holds more oil psi today with 60,000+ miles than it did with the performance pump and no more rollpin problems. Use an old distributor shaft. Cut and weld a piece of 3/8 allen wrench into the end and you have a tool to check and prime the oil pump with.

what i do is use a 5/16th socket(?) and get a long extension but you must tape the socket to the extension or it could pop off when you pull it back out.pretty easy thing to do!

You know you can drill the dist. and put two
pins in it. I have a good friend who is a pro
motor builder. He said if the pump is free to
put two pins in it.
