I was told, with a stock Olds 455 you should "Never" go over 5000 RPM. I was also told, you would be better off keeping it below 4500 RPM. And to only keep it at WOT for a short period of time (like that is atually possible).
Of course, with the proper enhancements, I've heard of individuals going higher than 5500 & 6000 RPM. But I don't do that, do you?

Eric, as someone who ran an Olds with a 10 quart pan and stock oil pump for 18 years, your combination of Hi volume pump and stock pan worries me. Olds engines have poor oil drain back from the cylinder heads at higher rpms. With a high volume pump you are looking to compound that problem. Keep a very close eye on your pressure gauge!!!!!
AS far as max rpm is concerned, the total engine combo is the determining factor with primary emphasis on cam, intake and exhaust. If you are dealing with a fairly mild setup, you should be safe up into the low 5000rpm range-for short bursts. The impeller cut and condition of your pump will likely be the ultimate determining factor of what rpm the engine will pull out on the water.

I'd install mondellos restrictors but you can also get a quick fix with restricted push rods are you shure its steel or is it nodular...

Run it at WOT until it rev's too high and blows. Make a note of the maximum RPM and set your redline for the new motor you will build at 2-300 lower.
Just kidding. I've heard of Olds with the proper oiling mods running 5500 all day and half the night.

Damn dude, you have some self control, I ran mine backed into the water on the trailer for 30 minutes to break in the cam, set the carb and timing, and hammered it WFO soon as I got out of the no wake zone.
The olds should be safe into the low 5000rpm range, but like everyone says, watch the oil gauge.

well becareful thats crank is about $1500.00 bucks and they only made a few, with the right parts on the next rebuild its good to 7500 rpm for short burst and a set of aftermarket rods but in stock form 5k max and you will run out of oil in about a minute or less at WOT.

I bought a 18 ft Wreight stinger with 455
and berkley jc a couple of summers ago.
Wide open 43/4400 rpm max. I ran it 37/3800
all the time for two summers with no problem
Sold it to my buddy and he ran it for about
two months and spun a main and 2 rod bearings.
But he was running over 4000 for 5 to 10 min. Just another idea. I would keep it below
4000 until you figure out if you have restrictors or not.
Good luck

shit, that must be a terrible feeling, being scared to push your foot to the floor, I am not one to speak because my motor is our of comission right now, but if a motor can take an entire day of spinning over 4 grand, put in something that can!!!

You know... I keep my BBC pinned at 5500 until I run out of lake... http://free.***boat.net/ubb/wink.gif
Big Block Chevy... The ultimate Olds performance upgrade!
I'm just kidding guys. I know I've been a smart ass on this thread, but we had a 1979 Sanger SuperJet with a Mondello 455 that was .080 over with all of the goodies and smoked a motor every year, then when it was running good, it would evacuate more oil out the breathers then most engines pump into the crankcase. Our freinds called the boat "Texas T". Switched to BBC, no problems. Ran faster too for way less money.
It is too bad that the Olds aren't supported the way they used to be, but fact is fact, they don't rev.
