I lost my volvo 280 outdrive at the Sacramento Delta last sunday! Whatever I hit busted it off at the steering fork and helmet, leaving the transom mount intact except for a crack up by the rubber block. The outdrive went to the bottom. What should I replace it with? The motor is a chevy 350 (volvo AQ255A). I have insurance but I only valued the boat at $5300 when I got the policy. Do newer Volvo outdrives (SX, duoprop, etc) use the same bolt pattern to mount the transom mount to the transom? What about the bell housing, etc??? So many questions...
thanks,
-driveless

I'm sorry to hear that. I know this doesn't help, but to be safe, you should always follow someone with local knowledge.
I bet the guys at Outdrive Exchange will know. (949) 548-2044.

Unfortunately I WAS the local! I had been through that stretch of water at least 5 times this summer... Was that you following me?!?! Ha ha!
I called Outdrive Exchange. They want $6900 for a new 280 not including transom mount, shift cable, etc... I might go back to where the outdrive came off with a mask, snorkel and fins!!!!

Man, if you were the local...those poor guys following you... http://www.goldenplasma.f2s.com/forum/smilies/confused36.gif
Those Swedes will get you every time. What did the Outdrive Exchange say about bolting up a Duoprop to your exsisting pattern? http://www.goldenplasma.f2s.com/forum/smilies/confused46.gif
Does your boat look like this one?

Yea, that's my boat. Nice photo, as you can't really tell that the drive is missing!!! ha ha ha... That's Ron standing guard during the towing. I must have down below hiding :-)
I didn't ask Ourdrive Exchange about bolt patterns. I will probably be taking my boat there to get an estimate for insurance.

You know, I think they make Bravo adapters. A used Bravo unit, gimble, controls, and trim pump would not be much more than you're going to spend on that Swedish unit...and you would get power trim. Just a thought. http://www.goldenplasma.f2s.com/forum/smilies/happy34.gif
I had the Outdrive Exchange do some work for me when I lived in OC, because they were one of the few who knew Volvos. There's a couple place on the web (in Florida) who may beat them in pricing.

Hustler - yup, called AAA and filed a claim. They are going to send out a rep to take a look.
Chesta - Thanks for the tip. Hustler towed me back to the ramp after my 'incident'. He has already told me to put a jet pump in it!!!
Havasu - I certainly will consider replacing what is left of the Volvo and replacing it with a Mercruiser. And power trim would be a real bonus! I need to find out how much $$$ I will get from insurance, and how bad the transom is damaged...
When you say 'bravo adapter', where is the 'adaptation' taking place? At the bell housing or the transom mount or the ???

I believe there is an adapter at the gimbal housing. I was looking at this a couple years ago. I think it was this guy who told me about it- www.sterndrives.com. (http://www.sterndrives.com.) Used Bravos are everywhere. http://www.goldenplasma.f2s.com/forum/smilies/happy01.gif
I also found this ad at OSO:
Volvo Outdrive: complete, Volvo 280 w/ steering and hydraulics, came out of a complete running boat, want to sell because I am converting to V-drive, $2000.00 firm, E-mail at BeyondKustom@aol.com, Phone # (760) 955-8967 <082700>.
If the transom is damaged badly enough, you may need to replace the wood- in fact, it might not be a bad idea to push the insurance company toward this. Then, you could just cut a Bravo hole instead of a Volvo! http://www.goldenplasma.f2s.com/forum/smilies/happy06.gif

Havasu - hey, I like that deal! $2K WITH trim... I was searchin on www.dibit.com (http://www.dibit.com) and found a few deals, but no one has returned my email yet! The insurance co (AAA) is in the process of appraising my boat.
RiverDave - aww come on, the river has more hazards than the delta. I just had some bad luck :-) I am hoping to attend one of your operations though, once I put a drive back on my boat!!! Maybe we can have an operation up in northern cal sometime. But I will need Hustler to help me spruce up the boathouse and get the septic tank pumped!!!!

Never been there, but I hear Trinity is nice.
Or we could all met halfway, Shaver Lake outside Fresno. We would have to camp and the elevation is 5200 ft.

Driveless, no problem with the boat house bud i told you we could build a bar in it throw up a disco ball a couple of lights and were partying!! Now for that septic tank thing I aint touchin it, But i think with a couple Hawiian Tropic girls and a few silvers we could get monkey to take care of it. Hell he so use to monkey sh** i dont think it would bother him one bit.

Hi Driveless,
Go ahead and and buy a Mercruiser Adapter Plate 827691A1 this will close the large hole into your Transom.
Then look for Bravo One with Transom, Drive Coupler and Flywheelcover...
Is the Sacramento Delta, the lake where you drive in Summer time with a car at the buttom?
