how bout no.
I thought I remembered something about Spico. The boat is up in Oregon. Don't have any pics yet.
You got any???
I know Her454 has/had one.
And I know there's one in a field visible from I-205 in Tracy.CA.
Somebody on the board gave some history on them when Her454 first got hers.
Morg,
I had a 65 wood decker a few years ago. Spico boats (Buck Smith) were made in Bakersfield. Smith was a mover and shaker in the late 50's and early 60s. Held the record for a while with 'Hot Toddy' and a few other boats. He was also one of the guys that started drag boat racing back then.
He built boats with his sons. I have an old instruction sheet, for building a wood deck boat, with his old address on it. I actually got to meet him a few years back at a CRA dinner. I sat across from him and a bell finally went off in my head on who he was. I remembered his old ads in hot boat where he was standing on the deck of one of his boats. He couldn't believe I remembered him after 40 or so years. I have several old ads of his stuff, if you want, I'll copy them and send them your way.
He also invented the chopper gun.
I should've remembered it was you OR!
Yes. My dad had one and I owned one for about a year. What did you want to know about them?
This picture is my dads taken in 1963. Back when the 389 Pontiac was the motor of choice.

Just wondring what caliper of boats they are?
Current owner is claiming 80 mph with what appears to be a stock SBC & a 300 predater.
What do you think??

They are a good solid classic boat. At least mine was. My father sold his in 69 and loved it. The boats were built with good durability. The one I had was a 62 and didn't stress crack or delaminate while I owned it. I sold it to a friend of mine and he ran it for a few years with no structural problems at all. Last year he got into a head-on accident towing the boat and sheared the prop, strut and rudder off as it slid over the trailer. No one was hurt and the boat is repairable and no harm the hull otherwise.
