Looking for any info on problems with the Chevy/GMC 2500HD 6.0L 4x4 front ends. I have a horrible vibration and noise comming from the driver side front end of my truck between 69 - 75mph. My mechanic thinks it's the torque converter???
Tires/wheel balance,and allinment are all good. Any other ideas from past experience here guys? Only 42,000 miles :mad:

I had some funky noises around 50,000, it turned out to be the wheel bearings...on both ends. Too bad they are non-serviceable....

I have a 2002 HD diesel and bought new rims for it yesterday. I took it to firestone tires to dismount my tires from the old rims and place them on the new rims. When the guy went to place my passenger side front tire on.. the hole front assembly had about an inch of play. And the new rim was touching the A-arm assembly. I thought the rims were the wrong depth, but it was my front bearing assembly,, it was shot and I would have never known if I hadnt bought the new rims... apparenty they go bad quick.. I had it replaced today by my home mechanic.. The part was 275.00 and he charged me 90.00 dollars labor. My truck only has 45,000 miles on it and im running 16" rims with 35" inch tires...
I don't think anyone on this forum will admit that they had a problem with their GM truck :p Good luck.

Is it lifted? Check your front driveline for play.

I have the 04 2500hd 4x4 with 42k.only probs i have had was the transfer case motor(left me on lake powell beach with 2wd oonly),intermediate steering shaft had clunk noise(pretty common),leaky door seal and thats it all replaced under warranty door seal took 2 tries at it.
Loose nut behind the wheel????????????????? :)
I have 03 GMC 2500 with 4" lift, 45000 mi. I haven't had any vibrations but recently I started getting a "service 4 wheel drive" indication every once in a while. Took it in and it needs a "encoder motor sensor". Bought the extended warranty from GMC. Turns out extended warranty doesn't cover it! *&^%#$@!$#%&))&^%$@!#$$%^ :mad: $450 to fix it.
My extended warranty only covers "lubricated" items and systems. I felt like I was the one not getting lubricated!
If you have a GM 4x4 and you get that signal while still under warranty, take it in right away and get it fixed.
Trade it for a 2006 Dodge Cummins MegaCab :argue: :D :D :D
My bearings went at 60k. Other than that, no problems. I run 285's on a 2WD with Fabtech spindles. Original brakes at 67k.
Might be selling though, only to get a 4X4
Our 04' had to have the steering a steering column part replaced. It was under warranty because there was a notice on it. Can't remember a noise coming from it.
Mine was missing a bracket that holds the steering shaft in place from the factory(underhood between the firewall & steering box) . It took about 15K miles before it wore out enough to start vibrating. It still took 3 trips to the dealer before they figured it out.
I have a 04 2500hd and it's probably in the steering colum! I took mine to chevy to have fixed and the part is on back order! :mad:
Yep ours was on backorder for a while. The dealer packed it really good :2purples: to get us by.

My experience with GM ( I have owned several new GM trucks) is that if you have a cool service writer he will handle you even if you are out of warranty. I had a front dif explode on a lifted IFS Z-71 5,000 miles out of warranty and my SW took care of it with GM. Of course, I used to leave cases of Heinekin (sp) in the back seat for him ;)

My 05 2500HD had the intermedite steer shaft clunk, took to the dealership on 1-9-06, they did not have the part in stock. They ordered it, it was in within 5 days, took it back on the 23rd of Jan. Fixed, noise clunck now gone.
We have an 04 2500 HD diesel CC. The only problems we have had have been wheel bearings (one went out at about 25k the other at about 40k) and pitmin / idler arm. GM has done all the replacement under factory and extended warranty. We are actually replacing the pitman and idler arm today with some after market stuff that is supposed to be stronger at my shop and we will see if GM will cover it. So far the truck has been very good though and I just installed a Fabtech 6" lift and hypertech tuner. Drives very nice after the lift. :cool:

I had a 88 1500 with over 190,000 and never had any problems with bearings. Why now with a more expensive truck. I think they build them like this so you have to spend the extra $'s in the service dept. :mad:

I have an "05 with a CST 6 inch lift and it sounds like the front end is going to fall off!!!!! I have had it in twice for retorques but it is very bad now!!!! It only has 8800 miles on it and it rattles more than anything I have ever heard...taking it to dieseldogs shop this sat, I hope he can help fix this problem

The bearings will start making noise similar to a brake problem but it will be constant.

That does not sound good. The Fabtech kit seems to work very nice. Good luck.

My 06 HD 2WD has a small rattle in front driver side. Gonna drop it off and get it looked at because it sounds like something is loose when I drive over some bad road areas. Better nip it in the bud.
I just had my itermediate steering shaft changed on my 04 GMC 1500. It had the clunking noise thru the steering wheel. The service manager says its a common prob but it wont come apart.
Well I finally got the front end rattle fixed this weekend. Clyde at West Coast Diesel took care of me. It was one damn bolt that was about 3 or 4 turns out that was causing the problem... The jackass installer could not find what was causing the problem, (two trips to the shop) and Clyde found it in 30 minutes or so....it rides like a million bucks now...i guess i don't have to sell it and go back to ford.....well at least until something breaks or I get bored......
I didn't know bearings were that big of a problem on these trucks. Just had a '00 2500 roll over 300,000 last july. It just wore out the first bearing, no service other than that. I'm pretty pleased with that. My 04 HD has over 80,000 on it and no trouble so far.

Only 42,000 miles :mad: Hey chief I am a service manager for GMC I have the same truck 04 2500hd 4 wheel drive lifted with 35" noise mostly heard cold making left turns bad vibration at freeway speeds, if your truck has big tires the front hub bearings are real week and seeing that most people make more right turns than left the hub takes a shit and eventually the wheel will fall off. if you need parts feel free to call me Jerry w.Scott pontiac GMC truck 626-255-1610 good luck to you

If your in good with your selling dealer the service manager can over ride the factory warranty and extended it up to 5 years and or 60,000 miles whichever occurs 1st. I work for GMC And this has been an issue for years

gentleman it is not the steering column making noise. the noise is caused by the intermediate shaft needs to be packed with grease. gm wanted us to just repack them, then they came out with a bulletin to replace them.and now the parts are on back-order so they send us another tsb that says to repack them again. the bottom line it is a design flaw and they wont stand behind it. any service manager like my self can cover it upto 5 years or 60,000 miles. call customer service and raize hell.
is this the same issue? I can just feel a slight clunking in the steering wheel!

Im having that same noise you are and it is at 19K and is rarely driven. it is a 05 I picked up in 04.....
