I agree there was a detonation problem, but that carboned cylinder seems to indicate something else was going on. I assume this engine ran a single plane intake? If so, the intake charge should have been close to the same, cylinder to cylinder. Assuming the ignition system is good, I would look closely at the sealing pattern on the intake gasket. Looks like those cylinders leaned out BIGtime.... vacuum leak at the gasket? Manifold/head mating surface not parallel?
Is the distributor tightened down ? :notam:
