Nope a Safari is not a boat. It is a GMC version of an Astro Van. Need a street/strip machine to help promote the shop. Do plenty of promoting at the lake now time to do it on the pavement.
Starting out with this Safari. I wanted a panel van but this is the one I ended up with. Traded a 383 short block for it. We did one for a guy and he never picked it up. So....

And this is what I intend to install in it. Some might recognize this as a Trident 522 but with a BDS 8-71 Roots Blower. The combination works so well I'm gonna put one to good use.

I even shot some video of the engine before taking it to the dyno.

would love to be able to do that. out here in this p.o.s. state. unless its before 1975 you have to have all the equipment on it that came from the factory.
pat(slotracer) :D
-
Wow that sucks. :notam: :notam:
Did I mention it will have a 9" rear end, Shorty powerglide tranny and the engine mounted right in the middle of the van?
-
What are you going to do for the dog house? you going to put some tire under it?
-
hell you better put some wings on it cause it's going to be one badass mini-van.
pat(slotracer) :crossx:
-
I'll cross the dog house thing later in the project.
Might end up with a lexan wall on the back of the cage sectioning off the rear of the van. Leave the engine open so it will breathe.
Gonna move the springs inboard of the frame rails. That leaves 13 inches of space in the stock wheel wells.
So NO serious tires but enough I hope.

Actually Pat, ANY year must retain all it's equipment...and that's also a Federal regulation. Ca is just not TESTING vehicles any older than 1975 although vehicles older than 75 can be sent in for an emissions check under certain circumstances. BTW, the Ca emissions program exists because the FEDS required it.
Info, this gonna be a wheelstander?

Info, this gonna be a wheelstander?
You know man it would be really cool if it was. But not sure if it will with a pump gas engine in it.
If it is really close, I'm pretty sure I can find a few more ponies to make it happen.

Dude trust me you live in heaven, come to this FKN cesspool of the USA and it's 1966 on back!.. :angry2: :angry2:

Game on here, but we have that nasty crap snow.
-
Cool project. Another retirement dream shattered. No laws in OK, to speak of, lots of water. Now I see that you get snow. At least in doesn't get below zero. Don't shatter that one, too. Info, check your PM's.
-
LOL that snow only lasted 2 days man. And only hung around where there were shadows and no sun.
-
Smog laws! Yes, I knew there was a reason why I moved to IL. I forgot about those pesky things. Sure there are federal laws, but if nobody ever checks or enforces them, then it's kinda the same as not having any, right? Unless of course you feel a moral obligation to protect the air or something weird like that. Isn't that what we have Californians for? I guess it's nice you guys do something usefull over there in CA, YA GAWDDAMNN YEAR ROUND SUNSHINE, OCEAN BEACHES, HOT BOAT BIKINI GIRL, HAVIN FUN, NON-SNOW SHOVELING, WINDSHEILD NOT HAVING TO SCRAPE MOTHERF**KERS! Not that I'm jelous or anything.
-
you could always move here and have it. only problem is you never know what laws they are going to pass to take away your next enjoyment thing to do.

That sounds like a real interesting project Ron.
I seen the "Hurst Hemi Underglass" wheelstander car at a show several years ago and was amazed to see that they used a Casale V drive box mounted behind the rear axle so that let them mount the engine way back.
Then the differential was aimed toward the back of the car.
There were a couple blocks of about 2" square steel that touched the ground when the front end was way off the ground and that's what made a shower of sparks.
-
Back in highschool the local gearhead took a Volkswagon beetle body and mounted it on a shortened Nova frame , Dropped in a 383 magnum out of a charger ,the engine was infront of you and completely open ,we sat in the back seat area , extended the steering shaft and was all direct drive, no driveshaft w/glide shifting to 9" narrowed rear w/ 5.66's :crossx:
use ta freak lots of folks out when you pulled up to them in a bug with nobody in the front seat area then smoked the tires for blocks when you left the lights :p
-
Went to visit the van today. they have the interior stripped and had some preliminary chop lines laid out. Decided on 8" of chop all the way around. And will probably roll in the remaining posts instead of widen the top to fit. Laid the tape out to represent where the top of the window will be.
http://moritzmachine.com/8side.jpg
http://moritzmachine.com/8rear.jpg
I think the front mark is still laid out at 6 when we were debating 6" or 8" worth of chop.

Will be installing these Fat Boy race seats as I call them. LOL

Ken your necks not the right color to live in OK.
Just kidding, anyway, hurry up an buy a place there so I have somewhere to vacation around home.
Cool project Ron.

Gotta wait two years Billy. Keep your eyes open. I assume you are planning a vacation.

My 1966 A90 dodge van fits 17.5 X 32's in back. With a short turbo trans the driveshaft is 12 in long. Have had small and big block chevys in it for over 30 years. 10.64 at 128 with 3.23 gears in street trim. Getting ready to redo it and upgrade the running gear and looks a bit. Good luck on yours, they handle a little spooky compared to a car.

Kittens are dying everywhere!!!!
Post some pics of that....

LOL I might have it painted to match the Cougar.

I bought these for it today. This ought to sound cool going down the road. Will extend some pipe to the rear end and turn them down.

And since the chop ended up being performed in the typical segment fashion. A donor roof is the best way to piece it back together. Found a donor van for $200.00. Brought it back to the shop for some wasteful harvesting. Had the top off before getting the van off the dolly.
Will also use the RF fender and front valance off of the donor van. Will remove the engine and tranny and send it to the crusher.

Info;
Maybe you should do the 2nd shop truck as a cabriolet??
Doesn't look too bad with no top......
-
Man. that's going to be a cool project to follow along :p
-
Well in person it looks a lot like a Hummer. The picture does not do it justice. Look close and the RF door has not been cut yet. And also the LH rear door top has not been split to widen. Posting this pic from a temporary location. Not sure how long it wil last.

I don't think that will be much of a problem. :)

Picked up a 9" but it will require disassembly. Assigned the task to Infomaniac Jr. He required very little guidance but got it done. He suddenly realized there was grease in there.

A couple more in process disassembly pics. Info Jr. is quite a mechanic despite missing a few digits.

Some of the tooling used to narrow a rear end. Bushings installed where bearings are normally. A straight ground bar slips through all the bushings to square everything up for welding.
http://moritzmachine.com/narrow.jpg
After very careful measuring and some precise cutting and prep. The tooling holding the cut ends in place to be welded back on.
