So ... I was in need of a rounded keel intake for a boat I am rebuilding ...
I came across an intake that needed work, but that was good for what I am looking for ... an intake that was worthy of modifying/rebuilding ...
I figured as I started this project, I would share my progress for those of you who are interested ...
I will be starting at clean up, work my way through the machine work for a shoe and ride plate, powder coating & finally installation ... it started this morning with about 2 hours of clean up ...
so, here we go ...
-
I started with a donor rounded keel intake that was in need of serious work:

the passenger side intake fin has been severly ground down ... ouch:

this one I took to show the rounded keel section ... if it were a flat keel intake ... it would not have this radius ... it would be ... well, flat ... (you can also see the difference of the 2 fins here, I don't even want to know how or why they were that ground down  ):

now we move onto cleaning ... I started by knocking out the old cut off bolts that were used to install the intake, moved on to using a penetrant to assist in aiding with the removal of the rock grate screws (let sit for 20 minutes or so then I use a #3 phillips bit on my cordless impact gun), then to my angle grinder w/ 80 grit sanding disc to clean off the epoxy, then cleaning it with scotch brite and dish soap ...

here is the cleaned intake (about 2 hours later) ready to be bead blasted, machined, repaired, then powder coated ... keep checking back for further progress ...

geez man, I thought it was rather obvious....so it can make sharper left turns!
you might as well leave it that way for the roundy round boat :)
-
Hey cas,...Busby is obviously board outta his skull, lets let him go so that we can see his style and mad skillz!
Carry on busby!....mikef's liberty if im not mistaken has his intake the same way! i could be wrong, also i have seen quite a few rogers that way and were claimed to be old CJ's
-
I'm looking forward to see the progress on the project. It's also a good thing to see someone starting from the bottom up...literally.
The shorter outside fin might even help keep the pump loaded in those sharp turns.

1st ever Eclipse circle boat in the works?!:)

Yeah ... a little bored ... but I figured there have been a lot of threads about how/why/what for/etc about intakes and their set ups ... so what the heck ... I'll take the time to post up the progress ...
And ... while I could spin a long tale about this being some intake that was done special for boat xxx ... it would be just that ... a tale. The truth is that someone has beat the death out of this intake & it is really hurt ... most likely hit one or too many sand/rock bars ...

There's my favorite van again
fockin van ...

Cool. So what are you building?
1st ever Eclipse circle boat in the works?!:)

2) no way this boat will see the circle track ... sorry Mike, nice try ... how about yours?

Good thread, Brian. Just one question, though. I have a similar intake that still has all that nasty epoxy on it. Could I get you to sand it off for me. I really hate making a mess in MY garage or driveway. :D

Sure ... just send it along with $100, a case of Coors Light and return freight $$$ and I'll get right on it ... :D
seriously though ... it does make a mess, but well worth it instead of paying for a new one.

That's almost worth it, especially if you could have it ready by Sept 14/15 so I could save on shipping. :D I've been slowly chipping away at the epoxy. Might have it all done by the time I'm ready to have my pad-bottom Eliminator converted to a rounded keel......in a year or two. :D

Wait until you see the finished product ... but obviously the price goes up as more goes into to your intake ...
watch for the next two steps (blasting and shoe/ride plate) ... that's when it should start looking real good ...

Nice work.
I did the same thing this weekend. My intake was in really good shape, but had epoxy everywhere, with about a tube of silicone thrown on top for good measure...
Also, whoever installed my shoe with a flat head machine screw needs a beating with a screw driver. Ill replace with socket screws
What are you going to do with that fin? I assume you'd weld a filler piece on there to bring the height back?

the orange van again. LOL

posting to subscribe to this thread so i can follow it as its updated.
looking forward to some good info. :)

yeah yeah yeah ...
as long as I'm showing off ... we might point out the fact that it's a cordless Snap On impact ... :D
and since I still have all of my toes ... I'm still barefoot ... Mike's (cyclone's) project almost convinced me to wear proper foot protection a couple years ago ... but until I loose a toe ... I'll be barefoot for life!
:D

and no one noticed the new bed on my dually in the back ground ...

Mikef's boat has not seen water in a couple of years now, and you expect him to use in in a circle boat race???? jeesh Brian, dont ya think your asking alot here?:)

I figured that it's a circle boat ... might enter it into a circle boat race? I know ... WTF was I thinking ...

RRRRight!:D

Whooda thunk it?!:D
The boat I have was only built to break the existing kilo record and then be retired. It was built as a disposable boat. She can't take the normal beating that running in the rough water of a normal circle boat race. Jeff was even surprised to see it was still around after all those years!:jawdrop:
That and I don't really make anywhere near enough cash to run any type of boat competitively. Just not in the cards for me. :o
Carry on......as I'll be watching and helping where I can.:)
(oil-check,fuel-check,batt-check,oil pump primer.....still ain't purchased one yet. )
-
dont rush into anything Mike
-
It's kinda hot in here.
-
Brian it looks like you will soon need a nice power plant to bolt in front of that intake. ;)
-
Come on mike, get that boat together already!:D
-

you are correct my friend ... :D

If it is a Circle Boat - Would not cutting off the Left Fin and Dropping the Intake deeper on the left hand side, or no would it be the Right fin and left drop or the right fin and right drop - Anyway there must be a way to help it load harder thru the turn. Man I have several of those intakes that need to be detailed out like your doing but the 100 bucks don't scare me as much as what the Beer outlay could be. Anyway A Good Setup to ya!

So what is the secret recipe for intake modifications on circle boats?

Can't say much about the new days cause there ain't much R&D going on. But this is something they did in the past.
