Pre-test for Refinery operator

Any refinery operators on ***boat.COM? I will be ask to take a general basic test which includes some math, comprehension, and maybe science i'm assuming?
Has anyone taken a test like this. I here it's similar to when you apply for a fire fighter position. I would also like to know, what kind of book, or study guide in particular to buy in for preperation for the test. I have never taken a test like this, and would be embarrased to fail something. So, some study materials and info. would help please. Thanks.

At Chevron refinery in El Segundo, CA.
My buddy emailed me the website based on info. for refinery operator. That's the only information I know as of now. Resume was sent, got an invite to test on the 6th. of dec. Need to start studying some sort of material.

If it's anything like a test for "Operators" in a chemical / refinery here in TX, it's mostly a mental deal to see if you have the proper temperment to spend long hours watching gauges and such. It's all psychological so there's no realy right or wrong answers, at least on the test I was given.
I took one years ago for BASF Corp. and the results said I needed challenging things to do and basically would go nuts sitting around in such a regimented environment.

I would srub up on some math and mechanical skills,there is some books called basic refinery skills maybe do a search for them. They have made it much harder lately, had a few freinds that got hired there and there not rocket scientists.Pretty much you will get math,mech,comp,and some refinery skills.I think that is your halfway decent at these skills you have nothing to worry about.If you do pass it make sure you talk about safety,enviroment and team work in your interview.

call 1-800-848-1747 they write the learning books.If not i may be able to get you a few.Talked to a few guys and i guess memorization with some general math was the bigest part of the test.

A long time ago (12yrs) I took one for PG&E. Not the same business but could be the same type of test. It was a joke. Addition, subtraction, fractions. Not even one basic algebra or trig question. I think they just wanted to weed out the complete idiots.

The first test usually consist of I believe four parts. Math, comprehension, mechanical aptitude, and basic chemistry.
The math is basic math up to if I remember maybe some algebra.
Comp is reading a paragraph and then answering questions about what you just read.
Mech app is usually pictures, like a couple of pulleys, showing which way they turn and then asking how the last one would turn. Lifting a box with a rope over a pulley different ways and which would be easier. Various size gears turning, which is faster.....that sort of stuff.
And then the chem is basic stuff like, what gas is in the blimp, bleach is it a acid or base, what type of heat does the sun give off, etc.
all are mostly multiple choice, I have a friend trying to get in also, and looking for some info myself. that is mostly what I remember about it though.
should be able to find basic test prep info on those subjects though.

Thanks for your time. I appreciate that info. My fiance bought a book for me at Barnes and Noble the other day. I'll just study and take some similar practice questions maybe on the test.

No worries i was thinking you were a coworker since you knew the union names.I know a few guys there from when i worked for golden west refinery.Jim mullins or maurice chevale,i think jim was in the crude and maurice the alky have not talked to them in a few years.

This is correct if they have not changed it since 1994. I worked there and took their entrance test. If you are looking to go into operations, the test includes a pc based operator control test. Almost impossible if you have no prior experience. It is a timed test with emergency situations where you have to page to multiple screens to determine the cause of the malfunction and correct it.
I had the highest score ever recorded so they tell me, but I also had 20 years experience at Texaco prior to testing. i quit after 3 years there. Refinery workers have no life. Shift work sucks and the refinery politics are unbelievable. The money is great but the sacrifice in social and family time is not worth it. If you are a loner who doesnt need sleep go for it!

Its basically a ADVAB test. Math, mechanical, chemical and comprehension. Its timed, don't worry about answering all the questions, woory about answering AS MANY as you can correctly.
