Thread: HAve slow 350 must travel

    northern baja
I'm defining a Winter project:
Starting point: 1995 208 Islander Baja (21', 3450lbs) with a 350 Mag MPI(375 hours)/Bravo(1.5), 21-23P prop that will do around 60MPH on a good day on through the prop exhaust.
Objective: Capable of 75MPH sprints(roughly around 5600rpm with my 23p mirage), fairly long runs 8-10 minutes at 60-65 (4800-4900rpm), and lives a long time (500 - 1000 hours)with normal maintenance.
Current thinking: 383 or 406 with quickn quiet(loud and/or switchable are illegal in my area)
Reliability strategy: Light forged crank, 6"eagle h-rods, forged pistons
Heads: Dart sportmans II with 200cc runners
Cam: Hyd roller(383) or ? for the 406
    Compression: 9.5:1 target
May lose MPI in favor of a Victor Jr./Holley 750
    My questions/fears:
    1. A 383 wouldn't get me to my 75MPH target?
    2. Would the short piston/compressed ring space restricted by the longer stroke and rod live to the reliability goal?
    3. Would replacing my newer one-piece main 350 with an old 2-piece main 400 be a pain?
    4. Are aluminum heads an option? I thought they were to be avoided for an open cooling system.
One thing for sure a big mistake is not an option around my house, as she's happy with 60.

A 15 mph gain is a pretty lofty goal. It would take a fire-breathing naturally aspirated small block to get there. I'd say a better option would be to rebuild what you have with strong internals, good valves, etc, and put a Whipple on top. You could make it a 383 while you're at it. That would probably get you there.

I know of a 144 Holley marine supercharger kit new in box and complete for $1500. PM if interested.
