Hello,
Any ol' outboard racers out there with a stash?? I am looking for a good complete Mercury 1500 Short Shaft for a restoration of a hand built wood (ribbon striped mahogany) 16' flat-bottom x- northwest racer called "Bonsai". The veneer refinish should be done in the next few months and the last piece is the Tower of Power. It need not be perfect but a complete runner with a good compression powerhead. We will be reworking the lower unit anyway. A 1500 XS, 1250BP, or 1500BP would be perfect but a good ol 1500 would work fine. I am willing to pay top dollar for the right unit. Ya might want to make a 10"x2 1/2" pad from the back running forward about 8' tappering down to nothing in the front. I think Tom Brown might be able to shed some light on this subject.

The idea behind the pad is that it will make your boat a little more efficient and more stable at high speed. I've found it to be a bad idea. The efficiency gain doesn't exist. The stability gain is real but then the boat will pound to beat hell in light chop. If you add a pad, I'd keep it to 9" or less in width. Personally, I wouldn't do it again.
A guy in Kelowna has the mid you want, and it's for sale, but he will want a zillion dollars for it. He is a used parts dealer and he always wants roughly new prices for everything. You could try phoning him and hammering him, though.

Thank You for the assistance and comments! My main goal for this boat is to restore her to her original beauty, show, new company promotion and some limited pleasure use. So I agree about leaving her alone therefore maintaining originality with only subtle changes. She was hand built in 1969 by 2 gents in Boise, Colonel Johsson and Bill West, I believe it was hand built from shortened plans of a V-Drive and ran a BP that was sold to a collector in Hawaii.

this place is fantasitc. Check out the 'racing history' section for tower of power talk and maybe even parts, but be prepared, this stuff is gold today. There's many old racers (and currrent racers) hanging out over here and they have lots of good info. I'm on the hunt for a merc inline myself, but not a BP, or stacker or anything like that, just a period piece for an old boat that I found.
Is that a Keller speedo in your boat? Haven't seen one of those since I was a kid.
What's with the 57 chevy and the 52 (or maybe a 53 shoebox Ford?) in the background? Nice toys.

Yes it is a Keller that is PERFECT along with the period tach and Superior "500" Steering Wheel. The boat had a cockpit cover that protected them from the nut that let this babe sit out for few years. I can't wait to get her done and gleeming like the work of art she is.

As for the cars, they come and go, I am a Classic Car Broker but my passion is finding restoring unqiue items. I have had this boat hanging protected in the garage for about 4 years and can't wait. I am documenting every step and hope to get her in a mag feature when done. Anyway, Thanks for letting me share!

Being a banger guy myself, I zeroed in on to your Gemsa engine for sale. My neighbor has a single stick and a dual over head set up, both Gemsas and both built for model T's. He's also the last record holder of the Long Beach Model T hill climb, which they haven't had since 1979 I think.
I can remember Joe showing up with Hank Becker with his Gemsa powered hill climb car, that held the record for years, when I was a kid in the early 70's. Hank just recently got rid of the car but had the engine for sale for a few years, don't know what happened to it. He said it was the worlds fastet model T engine, although Ed winfield went over 130 in his back in the day, so I don't know how true that is/was. Very cool parts though. I bought my first T from Hank's neighbor, another T guy.
I'd kill to have several of your cars, lol, really like that '49 F1. Very nice. I have a 41 Buick right now and some parts for another T I've been gathering for a while.
Here's a Rod and Custom cover, September 1967, with Joe, his daughter and one of his legendary engines. I was in the 4 ever 4 club back in the 90's and a few of the guys in the club that have been in bangers since the 30's and 40's knew Joe pretty well and have some great stories about him...some good, some not so good, lol.
