Thread: Do I need a water pump???

I am putting together a ex circle boat Bieser.
The way it was cooled is a small scoop/intake on the rear plate that pushed water into the engine. At speed this worked well.
The little scoop is just offset from the prop, so there is water flow even at idle.
At times I have to idle out of channels and such. Is there enough water flow at lower speeds to keep this thing cool?
I am almost thinking I can get by launching with a cool motor and cooling down before going back into the channel at the end of the day?
Anyone tried this? Or should I just get a Magnaflow pump?
    Be good, Jim

Get the pump......Too much money in an engine to risk overheating because you didn't put a couple hundred in a pump.....Cheap insurance.

Jim, you don't need a pump as long as you're on plane because it's force fed, if you're going to do a lot of idling you need a pump otherwise you'll develop a steam pocket when it gets hot, and no matter how fast you go it won't allow water to pass and you'll end up cookin it!..

    Thanks for the offer Dan.
I have a alu cover with the hole for the pump already.
    GoFastracer is right.
I never thought about the steam pocket. I can see how there could be trouble if the engine did start to overheat.
And it would only take 1 time to ruin a nice day on the lake.

But you're always going fast enough that you really don't need it.
