what is the purpose of the round bar attached to the scoop on this engine? Also, why do some leave the timing gears uncovered. Seems like they do that more on racing engines.

Taylorman, my guess is for the bar,to keep it from flying off at triple digits in case it gets loose. The open timing cover is access to the cam gear for quick timing changes during racing.

http://free.***boat.net/gallery/Gear...s/engine29.JPG That bar is a rope deflector. It is a devise to keep the holding rope from catching on the scoop at the races. The holding rope is lifted in the air when you are ready to go and if not lifted high enough it could snag the scoop. Hope this helps.

The rope deflector is probably 100% right. The only thing makes me wonder why does the bar has a bend too soon to allow the rope to drop down.{no room forward?]

the scoop arm is for the rope at drag raceways when you hold the rope and let go it keeps it from making the starting line a tow rope
