So why then, is it so common to install multiple subs when a single one would give the same performance?
    Move current and move air....
What's easier to cram behind the seat of a pickup, 4 250 watt 10's driven by 1 1000watt amp, 4 250 watt 10's driven by 4 250watt amps, or one deep a$$ 12" sub that can take the power of 1 1000watt amp? I think number 1 is the easiest...
Configuration depends on dollars and application...

I'm a big believer in "less is more" when it comes to subs.
However, most guys don't want to spend the money for a high-performance sub (BIG power handling). Also, some "really loud" subs don't reproduce music very well.
I think my next system will be two 1,000+ watt subs...

But isnt current relative to load?
and 4 10's would obviously have more surface (to move air) area than a single one...

Consider your entire system. You want the proper sub to other speaker ratio. HH made me aware of my ratio, and I have since added more mids and highs, and my system sounds much better.
