Thread: Pump buildup

Prior to my purchase of the Mandella flat, the Berkely JA pump had suffered a spun wear ring and spun bowl bushings. Once into it I discovered factory machining tolerances were not that tight back then and corrected them all with a lot of help from a fellow boater and machinist by trade. Here it goes...

Indicating off the bowl register since this is what technically centers everything.
    http://www.***boat.com/image_center/...icture_002.jpg
Boring to correct spun housing and to place wear ring "on center".
    http://www.***boat.com/image_center/...icture_003.jpg
Resurfacing suction to bowl flange, it was out .012 off square.

Resurfacing bowl, it was out .015, that would explain why there was a sweet spot to rotate to when mounting bowl previously.
Wear wring was then made from aluminum bronze ala CNC and installed to mock up pump to determine backspace clearance for Duane's stuffer.

Changing angle to 44 deg. to match my shallow back impellar and thinning flange for rear clearance.

Trimming back side of impellar to achieve .026 rear clearance.

    Impellar and finished stuffer.

Doing finish cut to achieve .018 O.D./I.D. clearance and Duane's repair sleeve installed.

    Balancing the assembly.

OEM nozzle machined for ftn bushings.

Pump fully assembled and since it is an early pushed forward install, I used stainless hardline to make lubing the bushings easier.

Hey, that was great. I was wondering how you mounted the suction piece on the mill, and how you decided what your set up was. Did you indicate the flange, and go from there, or did you indicate the wear ring bore? Or maybe you used a shaft stub in a fixture and went off the shaft bore? OK...I'll stop guessing. Same on the bowl. How did you decide which end to cut first if they were out from eachother?
That's a lot of nice work.
    Thanks

Thanks Steelcomp. Toe clamps were used down low, and stabilizers up to bottom of bowl mounting flange with rubber pads to control chatter. It wasn't bad, just made multiple cuts. As far as indexing, everything is parrallel to front bearing flange now. On the bowl, basiclly same thing. The two surfaces are now "parallel", indexed of of bowl register I.D. and rebored for a larger custom one piece rear bushing. It was nice to correct it on center since it had a spun bushing to begin with.

Thanks Budlight's, I've owned my SST for 19 years now and have developed a passion for jets (or sickness) over the years and have helped many a friend build one. I guess I don't do too bad for being a maintenance hand in a refinery. Yes I am a meticulous person....Thanks again.

You the MAN - SSTSleakcraft these are some really cool threads on the Mandella Flat Bottom Jet- I bet old Amos would really get a kick out of knowing what ever happened to that old flat bottom jet he had custom built by Mandella back in day!
Looks great!!! Thanks for all you have done to keep me and several others a-float!!!

This is a photo I failed to post of the machining of a wear ring from aluminum bronze stock.
