I use a non marine on an open engine compartment. I have a 6AL MSD box and we water ski all summer with it. It gets a little wet and no problems yet. Its been 2 years now.

I'd agree, you should be able to get by with the red box so long as you're not getting a lot of vibration or store your boat in a damp area. I've been running the same MSD in an open engine Eliminator, and closed engine daycruiser and haven't had any problems yet.

I have an enclosed compartment and run the marine units mainly for the vibration protection.

I am running a Digital 6 plus MSD box in an open compartment, It already comes water and viberation proof... Plus its works great if you want to run bottle with its built in NOS retard settings!!
