Miller Killer you are way off base with the dyno ASSumption. The dyno is your friend. You are not putting any more stress on a motor on the dyno than just running it in your boat. The dyno is used to to break in and tune your motor to where it will see most of it's running time. Ideally, you will make pulls on the dyno in the range of where the motor will make it's peak torque. In most jetboats you will run your Wiz Bang impellers and shoes and nozzles etc and the motor will pull to 6000 rpm maybe. By using the dyno you can adjust and move the power band around to accomodate that without beating your shit up at the river. You may find out that your cam is wrong or your motor is not happy where the timing is. When you come off the dyno you will, at most, need to make one jet change if that. You will spend $500-$700 to run on the dyno but it will be the best money you ever spent. Why do you think the guys taht race are always on the dyno. Because it shows them where they are lacking and where they are making power. It isn't just for racing.

Thank You Guru. A great explanation

I've been told that one dyno run is like 15 passes on the track?I do believe that you can tune your motor almost perfect by running it on the dyno.

Come on Dave, do you know how much work it would be to convert it to a jet. Thats why I say in spite of. http://free.***boat.net/ubb/biggrin.gif
Seriously I just enjoy jets more. If I/Os work for someone else, great. Anyhow, I put a call in to my younger brother who had the trader before he bought his spectra. He remembered the boat and is trying to find the trader. It has/had a 351Ford up against a Volvo outdrive. Do you want me to continue to look for the ad?

I've read most of this thread. http://free.***boat.net/ubb/frown.gif I sure hope all the various "different" opinions don't run off our experts who donate their expertice "freely" (Such as Duane Oblander and Greg Shoemaker)to the majority of us.
I've known Duane Oblander as a personal friend and pump builder since my 24 year old son was in diapers. Since my son has a jet as do I, we've used Duane way back when he was in the old "building", I've seen him go from one shop, to a better shop, being wiped out by a tornado and totally rebuild. I've displayed my boats at his shop and he's done a bunch of work for me as long as I've lived in kansas and we both have gone thru personal tradagy in our friendship.
Now, as a recreational jetboater, (I've owned 4 jets in my life, Sleekcraft, 2 Taylors & Eliminator) each time I've needed to have work done, Duane has always given me his professional opinion, the options and allowed me to make the decisions on what to be done as far as the work goes.....(keeping my budget in mind, cause the B.O.A.T clause puts me in the dog house.)[Break out another thousand,ie><BOAT>]. Sometimes the cost is a factor, but all the advice I've ever gotten from Duane has been right on target.
When all of us as consumers, pay someone to work on something for us, isn't it simply because we seek their knowledge and expertice? Shoot, if what I knew about jets fit in a thimble, then what Greg and Duane know would fit into a 18-wheel tanker truck.
before I knocked what worked and what didnt or argue over all of it, I'd seek out the expert who said "this is what works for me/us"(look at their records of winning ect ect), this is how it preforms and this is what we use" If I want similar results within the same pararameters, I'd go with what works for them, and hope it does the same for me....but what do I know.....I just like my boats and the fine work Duane has always done for me in the years, just as I'd say the same for Greg.
But--in the long run--i just do what the experts says works. I seen alot of ***boats in Duane shop/showroom, inclusive of his personal boat(the 572 FI 114 mpher) and his racin boats by Rick and Echo...I'd sell body parts for what they know and have, to get some of that action.
Lets all calm down and take the opinions and advice from our board members, who do this for a living, by donating their advise, fellowship and knowledge. If we don't and we run em off, then some of us, might not have a place to turn to to get these freebies.

Flat Broke, I don't want to make any "announcements" as of yet, but I'll say don't bother looking for the add. http://free.***boat.net/ubb/biggrin.gif If this deal is what I think it is I've already made my decision. http://free.***boat.net/ubb/smile.gif

Miller Killer, I would disagree Son. That engine on the dyno aint even got a load on it like it does when installed in your boat. Over-revving or overloading the engine is what will hurt it most. No way 1 dyno pull is like 15 real passes.

Hummmm...... Lets see I launch my car at 6200 RPM. Hitting 16" tires hard enough to almost drive the rims into the pavement. Shift it at 7200 RPM then run it through the traps at 7500 RPM. The car weighs in at 2815 lbs. Yeah I believe applying a water brake at 5 or 6000 RPM is at least 15 times harder on the motor hell maybe even as much as 20 times harder. Then again if I didn't hit the A/F ratio right in the first 3 passes I don't suppose leaning the motor out under those conditions would hurt anything? Would it miller?
