My buddies just bought an 89 pontoon boat with an 80hp Merc on it. The previous owner just had the carbs and fuel pump rebuilt, I have the receipt for that, as well as some other maintenance he had done last year. My concern is when we he was showing us the motor he ran it with out having water hooked up, I actually told him to turn it off after it had ran for about 20 sec. So now I am a little worried about the impellor... how hard are they to replace? Any other maintenance I should do?

Impellers are easy to change. After the first time, it will take you about 30 mins. They say your supposed to change them every year. I don't. I will about every two years. I can watch the water coming out of my exhaust and tell when its time to change.

So how do I do it? Is it like an alpha 1 where you just drop the lower unit? Thanks for the help... Any thing else I should be aware of

I've never done one in an outboard. Mine is an alpha. I've been told there basically the same.
