Got a '89 model 305 out of a friends boat with a cracked block. It has the center bolt heads on the valve covers.
Got a mid 80's 305 from another friend but it has the traditional 4 outer bolts on the valve covers.
Will the later heads fit the earlier block???
    Thanks in advance..

I'm pretty sure the heads will fit the early block, but the intake manifold will not fit unless it is a late manifold as well. At least that is the deal with the Vortec heads.
    GOOD LUCK

go here maybe it'll help you figure out what you have heads (http://www.chevymania.com/tech/vortec.htm)
the heads can interchange with eachother. but like the last post says if it's a Vortec head you will have to use the Vortec intake manifold. if you have a set of the 53cc 305 heads casting number 14022601 or 14014416 throw those on a 350 or a SB 400 filler up with high octane and hang the phuck on also the 60cc heads casting numbers 462614 or 10065205 ~64cc are good ones for making bottom end torque dont expect much on the top though.
