to make my 454 a 496 . The crank is a 4.25 but what about my rods.

The standard deck (9.8") block454 comes with 6.135" long rods, 4.00" stroke crank. If you install a 4.250" crank, along with the standard length rods, you just need pistons that have the correct pin height to work with that combination. The 496 uses a .060" overbore with the 4.250" stroke, so the bore would be 4.310"
If you are buying new rods to build the engine, you might consider .250" longer than stock, or 6.385" with the standard deck block combination. A tall deck would work with longer rods.
