Push or pull fuel through the stock merc canister filter? 172 gpm mechanical pump. Running dual 750's w/ a blower. I've allways heard you should push through. Is that correct? Thanks.

That's one of the major differences between mech. and elect. pumps. Elect pumps aren't really designed to pull fuel as well as they push, so it's always a good idea to push with elect. Mech pumps, on the other hand, are designed to pull and push, and it's not as big an issue with them. I think it's always a good idea to push through a filter if you can,. but not always possible. If you have to pull, then a mechanical will do a much better job.

wow I was alway under the assumption to have the filter before the pump
    to protect it

Yes it is a very good idea, but depending on the type of pump it's not always feisable!.
