send me any chevy casting number off any engine componet from 1955-1993 and i can tell you. 4 bolt main blocks usually had a 010 somewhere by bell housing. the ls6 450 hp # is 3963512. Also there several other blocks out there that were used in chevells and corvetts that make great engines. :rollside:

At the lake last weekend we talking about how you identify a factory two bolt and four main on a big block. If you look at the plug above the oil filter
the 4 bolt will have 3/4 plug and two bolt will be smaller.
Yes...sometimes but not always. However the oil cooler passage plug to the left of that...if it has one...those have always been 4 bolt mains from what I have seen.

Its def. 4 bolt so what hp is it?? does that depend on the heads, the casting number on the heads are 6272990 the block and heads say hi perf.
Ok after researching this I have a 454 truck engine with replacement heads
    does that sound about right
The heads show to be rectangle intake port (large port), open chamber, high performance heads, produced between 1970 and 1976 used on the 454.

When I took mine out I didn't know that little stat. It had a small plug and a smaller one to the left. Dropped the pan and walla --4-bolt. #14015445. Good thing to know Bob..I wonder how many people walked by this motor before I bought it.

Genuine OEM 4 bolt blocks had the cooler ports drilled and tapped, but since 2 and 4 bolt blocks are the same and there's been a gazillion 2 bolt blocks converted to 4 bolt, even if you don't see the cooler plugs it could still have 4 bolt caps on it, best to pull the pan!.. Unless it came out of gramma's wagon of course!..

I disagree. My friend purchased a 454 LS6 from GM through our local chev dealer in 1990. We replaced the heads with aluminum ones. The heads were 119cc open chamber heads with 2.19 int and 1.88 exh. This was offered in a 10.2 comp ratio. They also offered an LS7

The LS6 came out in 1970 and had closed chambered iron heads, in 1971 the LS6 had open chambered aluminum heads!..
