For what it's worth, I just built one on DD at 10:1, carbed, single plane, based on a Isky EE392 cam under .600" lift, Edelbrock heads rect port heads, with headers and mufflers and made 571HP @ 5500, so I think it's doable. Careful parts selection.
is a 600 hp pump gas 502 doable??

I have a 502 (GM crate 502/502 short block torn down and remachined, BP, balance) 8.5:1 w/World Products oval ports made into mini square ports port matched with Dart single plane intake and 850 Holley, comp hyd roller. Dynoed at 598 HP on 91 octane. Great runner.
interesting, thanks!

Depends on the Max rpm you want to turn. For an I/O application and a peak of 5500 it will take a well matched combo. For a jet or flatty application that is going to turn 6500 or so it is cake.
Very do-able.
It is all in the heads. (And picking the right parts all the way around. But mostly the heads.)
