what would be the max horsepower or torque that a 1981 260 mercruiser outdrive can handle? this outdrive is on a 1981 ss-20 hallet; always serviced and maintained. I'm looking to slap on a new set of heads, cam change, rockers, flat tops, etc.
also, i would need to know if anybody makes a header to help excavate the gases with this newer output. potential problem i see is my engine cover sides are right up against the current exhaust manifolds which are of course water cooled so there are no clearance issues, but putting on some headers might present an issue of clearance based on the bends of the header tubes. any ideas and or thoughts would be appreciated. thanks for looking at my first question.

The current Alpha Ones are used up to 300 hp behind the 350MAG MPI. Before the Bravos came out there were some 454s put in front of Alphas. They didn't break right away!
