So who built the pontiac?
This year's Engine Masters rules really level the playing field in a manner that I had recommended to Primedia less than a year ago (right after EM 2005): requiring not only pump gas but do a shootout using only factory iron block & heads and also a "pump gas compression ratio" so as to fend off the purpose-built race motors that live only long enough on the dyno so as to post good numbers before meltdown. I made this recommendation because the Engine Masters was, to some extent, originally designed to show what performance gains could be made to a "hot rodded" a V8 engine. But what this contest quickly evolved into was the best-of-the-best engine builders showing up with race engines that really pushed the boundaries of the intended guidelines (ie 14:1 c/r engines running on pump gas, etc.).
Incidentally, my emailed suggestion received a reply that downplayed the idea because obviously this is as much a commecialized, high profile marketing excersize to sell high performance aftermarkmet parts...and that they couldn't downplay due to the sponsors involved. Nevertheless, the 10.5:1 max compression ratio rule really levelled the playing field, and seems to be showing that the Ford indeed has some advantage. It ain't over yet, but the current top ten posting is as follows:
1054.90 points--Ford
1054.53 points--Ford
1027.20 points--Ford
1026.00 points--Ford
1018.50 points--Mopar
1013.67 points--Poncho
1013.00 points--Ford
1012.30 points--Ford
1002.10 points--chebby
0996.10 points--Ford
This will obviously change by the end of the day, and then we'll see who will be in the top six and go to the finals. Nevertheless, I'll bet the top ten will remain more than 50% Ford entries. I wish to congratulate my friend and colleague, Scott Johnston, who is currently holding second place and beaten out (be less than half a point) only by veteran master Mark McKeown.
Go Ford.

So who built the pontiac?
YB,
The Pontiac holding sixth place above was entered by a builder named Iron Horse Machinery. However, there is a second Pontiac entry that just ran and, as ususal, Jon Kaase (the additional Poncho frontrunner) is on top of everyone right now. Revised top ten is as follows:
1082.30 points--Poncho
1054.90 points--Ford
1054.53 points--Ford
1027.20 points--Ford
1026.00 points--Ford
1018.50 points--Mopar
1013.67 points--Poncho
1013.00 points--Ford
1012.30 points--Ford
1010.00 points--chebby
While Kaase's original reasoning for going with the Poncho comes greatly from his soured business dealings with FoMoCo, his engine building talent remains obvious.

The older pontiacs are the only GM I will touch. I have seen ppl do crazy things with a 60 over 400,10.5 to 1, pump gas, ported iron heads and stock crank. 750+ hp with a 750 Q jet.
No Buicks??
No chebbys? I thought they were the cheapest, easiest and most common engine to build...

They are... they just make the least hp... :rollside:
