Bill, They are not racing for much more today! You go boat racing because it's in your blood. not for the money.
When I won blown gas flat (NJBA) I got a cheap plastic trophy and a check for 236 bucks!
Yes, the pics are great. Thanks for starting the thread and thanks to everyone for posting.
72superlight, It's pretty cool that you still have your dad's old race boat.

    Hey Superdave,
Ask 72superlite to tell the story of how he got Dads boat back. Turns out it was about 5 miles from where are Dad put it together. The guy that had it swore up and down that the hull was a 76 or newer. What he didnt know was we recognized Dads fabricated aluminum pieces, still in the boat, and we had the serial number to compare. After so dickering about the price. The guy agreed to sell. What was really cool was when Dad saw the boat again after nearly 30 years. Oooops I told the story..

Boater Bill, You're right about the grudge matches. And as I remember, any Boat that raced that day could challenge the top fuel boat and if you couldn't make it to the line or broke going down the strip you lose.
Is that still in the rules? When Renee won the top fuel race he got 300.00$. And by the time we got home it was spent

Hey Boater Bill, I believe the first 200mph dragboat was Crisis, a Sanger hydro, in Perris, Ca., Saturday, September 13th 1969. If my sources are correct.

Superlite, you could be right. I've huffed a lot of nitro fumes and my memory ain't that great!

Ah yes the smell of nitro, unfortunately I have to get my nitro fix up here at the NHRA event once a year. Dragboat races are hard to come by up here in Wa. We have made it to Red Bluff a couple of times in the last 3 years though. Keep on posting this stuff, even though I was 2 in 1969, I love the old stuff.
