Okay,....here is another naive question. How do you know what type of v-drive you have. Typically in newer flats what degree are installed. Is there a place it is stamped? Is the model or v-drive type stamped on the case somewhere? Is there a way to measure?I found a set of gears I want to buy, but I'm noy sure what degree drive I have.

Typically, most newer runnerbottoms have 10 degree V-drives in them. Your Canyon Marine should have a 10 degree. To make sure just pull the V-drive front cover off and it will have the degree it is stamped into the top gear. Iam not aware of the V-drive being marked anywhere on the cases or whirlaway housing telling what degree it is. The V-drive should have a serial # stamped in the bottom of the front cover, as long as someone did not have to grind it to keep from hitting the floor of the boat. Call Casale with the #'s and they can tell you the degree also.

Fired up, Your Casale box is a 10 degree, but just for peace of mind do as JJ said and pull the cover off the upper bearing case and make sure that the gear is stamped 10, what gears are you looking at running with the mild motor, my suggestion would be 15% or 18% these are good 1/4 mile gears for most applications, 22% will mph a little more but the smaller gears will E T well and make your prop work like it should.my.02

FU The casting number on the front cover will tell you what degree it is. About the middle of the front cover. Should be a 61000 type number if I remember correctly. Read it and I will get my notes.

    610xxx is 10 deg and 620xxx is 12 deg.

If you are buying used gears, and they have no markings on them to say what degree they are they are probably 12s. 10s and 8s are usually marked.

I'm one of the new guys on the block. I just did this and itn is not hard at all. But as with most things you need the right tool for the right job.You need a special tool for pulling the case apart. What you need is a bearing puller to remove the bearing from the upper shaft of the v-drive. Remove the bolts from the upper circular cap, remove the cap, then you apply the puller and remove the bearing. Once removed the bolts holding the front face of the v-drive can be removed. Then loosen the jam nut on the center bolt of the lower circular cap and screw the bolt in. This should pull the front face of the v-drive off. The bearing puller is about $40.00. I picked one up from Hi-Tech Marine last week. Most of the performance marine websites have them.

A Whirl-a-way is a propshaft release. In the event of the engine locking up such as kicking the rods out it will dis-engage the prop from the engine. These are required by IHBA for racing. Gear lash should be .004"-.008", The 1/8 turn slop you have is the in/out dogs moving within each other. This slop is normal for a pin drive and at idle might make noise. SuperDave 013 has a nice bearing puller he sells for about $40.00.
