Thread: Starting Dry - revisited

Ok, here ya go! Jet Boat Performance rebuilt my pump a couple of weeks ago and it hasn't been in the water yet. The only thing it's done is it was towed about 250 miles all done on paved roads.
Here's what came out from flushing the bowl through the nozel using the garden hose-

as you can see upon a closer look, there's some pretty good sized pebbles in there-

Given that, here's a couple pics of the impeller-

when Tom removed the old impeller and wear ring, he found that the clearance was .040..... .015 larger than it was when stock. Being the pump is untouched in 22+ years of mostly unknown use other than knowing it spent most of it's life in SoCal, that really isn't all that much wear.
Now here's a pic of the leading edges of the impeller. As you can see there's a whole lot of dings in it and that's after I got in there with some emery cloth and knocked them down.....as best I could from underneath.

You can pretty much tell there's been a lot of crap that has gone through the impeller and pump. I wonder just how much of that .015 wear was from running in shallow water as opposed to running it dry?

That sure looks lkike a lot of crap. People don't realize that goes in the pump, heck, I never thought of it till 2 years ago.
I cover my intake now except for the short pulls from campsite to the ramp at the lake. I wish my trailer would fit one of duane's intake covers, but it doesn't.

Damn, that looks nice, LOL..... Sure got me thinkin about puttin some sort of guard under the bunks to block the intake. Again......

    Cool post.
See Cas, I told you that the intake was like a big scoop down there suckin' up all that road trash.
When I posted that info a few weeks ago from my exeriment from 27 years ago, and how we made a cover for the intake after that, I got a load of crap from others on the board...(the REAL racers...lol).

Question for "Old Rigger"..the "T" you showed in the other post we were talking about...do you think if he just hosed out the pump with a hose, hooked up your style of water "T"..that boat would still have been safe to run at idle of the trailer..

Here is mine that has not been touched since '69 and run dry A LOT.
The pump is out of the boat, but I have yet to pull the impeller out to measure it.

Duane took a picture of some crap he got out of a pump a couple of years ago. I looked for that pic, couldn't find it so I did my own little test.
I'm not knocking anyone that won't run their pump on the trailer, it's all a personal preferrence thing as far as I'm concerned. I'm also not knocking anyone that does run their pump dry, I do it but only after flushing it out.
The thing is, my pump was dry when it was towed. I'm guessing that if there's water in the pump/bowl, it's going to collect more crap than what came out of mine.
The boat also wasn't towed across a desert from SoCal to the river/Havasu. Again, I'm guessing there will be a lot more crap entering the pump towing down there. Given that, how many people tow across that area, drop the boat in the water and go? By doing that, how much of that crap is getting flushed out before firing it off in shallow water?
    Lowrider,
I can't use one of Duane's covers either, my trailer is just too low. Duane was nice enough to send one out to me a couple of years ago to try out. I'll be going back to what I used to do years ago.

    OR,
We've had numerous discussions about racing vs lake use so you know where I stand on the subject. I see and read about a lot of people doing things to their 400hp lake boats based on a racer's opinion that just don't work too well.
A perfect example is a friend of mine was talked into putting a shoe/ride plate, loader and stuffer on a heavy boat with stock power. He lost 6 mph after the rebuild. All those things are great providing the boat and power available can handle it.

My trailer would be borderline too low, but it has only 2 bunks, spaced too far apart to mount his cover to.
I ran 4 small eye-screws into each of the bunks, stretched a small ATV bungee-net over the intake with them, and stuff a 2" thick piece of foam under the net over the intake. Worked great all last summer. Is something I have to remove, but isn't hard to do.

Very informative post. And as you said, that wasn't even across the desert to the river. I like to fire any boat on the trailer just before launch, I can see now I need to submerge the pump for a good rinse prior to ramp firing....as well as a good wash out at home prior to garden hose firing.........I think I'll look into a cover of some sort for the intake grate. I guess there is a lot to be said about pulling props off of v drives prior to towing very far...........MP
