Thread: What lies beneath

Boy does it feel good to get these things out of here!
Under the O.K. vinyl was some quickly disintegrating wood:
    Rotting Frames:

    The worst cushion:

Fresh cut marine plywood waiting for resin this weekend (or sooner!):

The old cushions each had two 1" drainage holes drilled in the bottom, I am planning on doing it the same way unless I hear different.

Looks like you got to it just in time too.

Nasty, ain't it? Mine were so rotten, the frames came apart in my hands, LOL...
Guess you got your seating project figured out?

You know, thinking about how much water you put into the cushions after you jump overboard for a swim, or just get through skiing, I'd almost put more than two holes into the bottoms. The foam cushion is encapuslated in naugahyde & plywood, with no way really to dry out when you bring your boat home. Maybe a whole bunch of 1/2" holes!

    D-man,
I am keeping the layout the same for right now. The vinyl is pretty good and with the enclosed engine I can seat six people. The reason I had asked about your layout is 1) I really like it and 2) I recently bought some OT headers for the Olds that would have eliminated the doghouse and the two seats at the transom. I was thinking of trying to redo the whole interior to accomodate the headers and still be able to seat six (2 adults + 3 or 4 kids). I have thought long and hard and have decided that this boat was meant to be mini daycruiser not a hot rod, and am not going to install the headers. I still have the speed bug, but if I ever go over 65 it is going to be in a different boat, probably with a BBC.
    Ken,
That is definitely worth thinking about (1/2" holes). They really get quite wet with the way my family uses the boat.

You think that's bad? Check out the old false floor they pulled out of my boat!

Always prop your seat bottoms at an angle to help facilitate drying when you're done using your boat. Budlight

You have a point. No way around it, if you run the headers you are gonna lose some seating or room for "stuff" at the very least. And just cause its a daycruiser doesn't mean it can't be a hotrod. :rollside:
Here is a little inspiration. An extremely well-running daycruiser, with plenty of seating, doghouse & all.....
And thank you for the compliment, you've got me thinking about re-locating my diverter control, too! And I wasn't lyin about your boat bein clean either...

EL nice work !! Try "desicant bags " during layup they absorb "Ginormous" amounts of moisture. You can make them cheap !,desicant crystals comes in gallon cartons from the grocery or hardware store fill up a couple of old socks and throw em in the bilge. Tom
BTW rathole (perforate) those bottom like Ken said earlier,a nice touch is to staple window screen mesh over the holes before the foam
