If you don't mind me asking...what did that cost you? I know you sub'd it out yourself right? I'm also hoping to do a pool next year and these details would greatly help out.

My pool would have cost 1/2 if I didn't have the rock. The rock work will put your wallet in a tailspin. It took them 2 1/2 months JUST to put the rockwork in. And if you don't get a good rock guy you will be F'ed. I know a guy who hired a company who said they could do rock work. Let's just say nicely that they used the same material with VERY different results.
I did owner builder but my contractor is a licensed masonry company (thus the rock work) but he has been building pools as owner/builder for over 20 years. So he managed and subbed the entire job. He did everything in my yard: concrete, patio cover, BBQ house, retaining walls, fountain, courtyard, pool, grass, plants, trees and sprinklers. The whole package deal brought a lot of my costs down.
Here are some older photos right after we filled it:

Very nice RRX. I just went through doing my backyard up. I didn't do a pool but we did an oversized spa with a huge waterfall, built-in BBQ, Patio Cover, Concrete, Landscaping etc. I spent about 60K when all said and done. I added and upgraded a lot of stuff along the way. I could of added a pool for another 10K but I didn't want the upkeep. I had about 20 different bids before I chose one. This company was 15K cheaper than any of the other bids, plus the spa, waterfall, BBQ, and sq feet of concrete was a lot bigger and they did great work. I am happy with the work they did. I agree the rock work is key. It took them 2 weeks just to build the waterfall. It is all boulders with some pieces of slate stone. Just moving the boulders was a job in it-self.

Just for perspective...a leap from the top rock is 10 1/2 feet from the rock to the surface of the water. It is like a cliff dive. Also fun to rock climb across when the water is falling.
