AND WHATS THE SPEED DIFF. BETWEEN A 300 AND A 300X?

Hell no, anytime you can dump an OMC for a MERC, your leaps and bounds ahead of the game. http://free.***boat.net/ubb/biggrin.gif
Havasu Barney reported that the 300 ProMax had more like 280hp whereas the 300X has more like 330hp. If this is the case (which I do not doubt) there is no comparison. The main difference I see is in high performance applications, the original 300 won't rev high enough. I think the limiter was set a 6,250 or so (not exactly sure). With the X, your limiter is either 6750 or 6800, so right there, you are better off.
In general, anytime something new comes out, it is best to let the manufacture work out the bugs before you buy. I believe you will be happy with the purchase.
What kind of hull is it going on?
PS: Snapper, sorry for the OMC bash, it was an open shot I had to take! I would expect nothing less if you were put in a reverse situation http://free.***boat.net/ubb/wink.gif

It's true AND very much worth it.
    1998 300 VS 2001 300X
Same boat, same setup, same prop, same day, the 300X ran a full 15mph faster.
Rev limiter hits at 7100rpms on the X, 6000 on the 1998 model.
The X is not as friendly around the docks like the 1998 model, it behaves much more like a Hi-pro 2.5 and likes to run,
    Very very strong motor! http://free.***boat.net/ubb/smile.gif
The new 2002 has improved electronics and ingnition, your gonna love it! http://free.***boat.net/ubb/smile.gif

DONT FORGET THE 300 X HAS THE BEEFER LOWER UNITS IE. GEARING AND AN LARGER PROP SPLINE. I SAID NOTHING SNAPPER, I KNOW THAT OMC RUNS HARD. RIVER READY, CANT WHAT.

They made several changes in the ignition and all the electronics.
So many changes that I decided not to run a 2001 and a 2002 as twins, gonna go ahead and buy the new 2002 models.
No real performance gains but should add a great deal to the life of the motor.
    Also about $1,000 difference.
