WFO, Find out what kind of Horsepower your motor makes and then you can make a gear call. Also, if you are running one of Joes props they are typically pretty grabby. If you are pushing 1000hp, you should be around a 22 to a 29. With the ProGas motors we had over 1240hp and ran 18's but that was naturally aspirated and weak on the bottom end. If your motor is making 800-1000 hp I would put a 15-18 gear in it.

Since you have a scheduled showdown looming on New Years, I would set the boat up for 1/8 mile. I doubt that you will get a chance to run a ¼ mile. Get a jump on your competition and get out front. Then do the river race thing. Let off after you pull a few lengths and collect. So, with that being said, I would go with big prop and small gears. Oh, I just happen to have a 1 inch 11 ¼ x16 Menkins comp flat prop for sale. Virtually brand new.
    Best of luck

Thanks guys, I have a few friends just completing there builds and they have a dyno proven 1k hp. They are flats and want to know what would be a good gear to start with? RPM would be in the 7500 to 8000 range.
