Thread: Kiekhaefer Rack steering...

I'm looking for an exploded view of the old Kiekhaefer rack steering unit. Can't seem to find one on the net anywhere. I really don't want to replace the steering on this baby this week. I need to re-assemble the helm, and don't have it quite right.
Any help out there? Perhaps a pic would be enough.
    Jim.

Jim, be more specific about your problem and I can probably help. I have the unit I took out of my old boat down in the garage.

    Cool.
Is there a plate that bolts on the back, and if so, can you describe it?
It would be approximately diamond shaped with 3 holes, two for the mounting bolts and 1 for the steering wheel shaft. I seem to be missing this plate. So' I'll make a new one if that description is correct. Just seems like that long bolt (shaft) is supposed to turn in there, but maybe it doesn't and is fixed inside the steering gear.
Otherwise, what the hell goes back there? I don't want to replace the sucker if I don't have to, but I have to figure it out today, or I will be replacing it.
    Jim.

    Hey,
You're in Martinez. I could fly out and see it. Give me an excuse to run into GTH for a couple of hundred bucks too.
If possible. No big deal either way. I'll figure it out somehow.

I'll check when I get home from work and let you know.

The (2) bolts on either side of the shaft secure the rack assembly to the helm assembly and the center bolt has a washer and nut that retains the pinion. Don't forget the spacer between the pinion and drive.

    Thanks.
What keeps the shaft and pinion assembly in place. Seems like with a nut on the back, thw whole arrangement would just slide out. Not stay in place.
I tried that, but maybe I didn't snug that center nut up far enough. Seems like it just pulls up the gear but doesn't really snug anything.
As for the other parts you are talking about, are you referring to the two black pieces that attache to the pinion on the front and back?
This is what bugs me. What holds the back one in place?
    Jim.

Jim, there is a large flat washer with the nut on the back side. It is 1 1/4" diameter, which is just a little larger than the pinion gear. Thats what keeps it from just pulling thru the rack.

    Ah,
    That's the answer.
    THanks.
