OK I know this is probably a no brainer so please try to not be too harsh.
How do you determine where 12 volts is at on a 48 volt golf cart?

There are four 12 volt batteries. Four X 12 = 48. Just take the + and - from one battery: 12 volts.

    This has 6 8volt batteries.

There has to be something knocking the voltage down then.

Take the positive from the first battery in the serioes and the negative from the second battery in teh series, this will get you 12 volts.
Any other place and you will have to much voltage

You need to do as JBR says. However, you may take the 12v from anywhere in the series. You can start at the positive of the third battery and the negative of the 4th battery.
8 volts x2 = 16 volts. No way to use two batteries in series and get 12 volts. That works on a 36 volt cart. 6 batteries at 6 volts each. On a 48 volt cart you need one of these.
Rich & Bob, get off the pipe & get a calculator.

If you have 12volt head lights or any other 12 volt accessories, there is already a reducer on board.

    Damn pipe x2.
Sorry, I didn't read well enough. I thought it said 8 6 volt batts. That being said, most 12v stuff would likely operate at 16v with no problems. Most car audio equipment is rated at 14.4v. For lights, it would probably just reduce their life by 10%.
I did the same read the first post and skipped ahead
