Thread: cobalt questions

    not a hot boat but a friend has a few questions. bought the boat in havasu lives in salt lake about 4500 elev. boat wieghs 3200lbs dty 22 ft condure open bow. k&n filter 14x19 3 blade at 4400 rpms 41 mph. mercruiser 260 hp 4 barrell. what do you suggest to bring up rpms and speed. what prop would help any mods? any suggestions would be appreciated.

    The boat will need to rejetted for the elevation of Salt Lake City. That engine package should run at 4800 rpms. I would step down a prop size or have the current prop modified to increase rpm.

    Ed,
    Cobalts are heavy deep V boats. Those numbers sound right for that kind of hull, power, and elevation. To get any more out of that boat he needs a big block (torque). I don't think he could push any more prop and if he did it would just slow down the RPMs. When I'm home I run my 21' Lavey at 5,100 elevation with 340 hp and a 22 4-blade. The speed limit here is strict so I have never done extensive speed runs but I would guess we can run about 4,200-4,300 RPM at about 52 MPH. I could run my 19p and get more RPM but we never push it here, we just cruise and board. The torque of the 460 pulls boarders behind the 22p without a problem. It runs about 60 on GPS at the river with a 23p pushing about 4,500-4,800 RPM.

    Back in the mid 80's I worked at a dealer where we sold new cobalts and chapperels (for those of you paying attention this thread says nothing about my age ).Those cobalts at the time where like the cadilac of most lines , plush ,roomy ,and handled great.But yes they where heavy and the chapperels would kick there a$$ for speed.Great boats.
