Thread: What is involved in this changeover?

    What is involved in changing a jetboat from 455Olds power to a 454?
    I know that all the accesories have to be changed, also motor mounts, what else? Wiring? Driveline?
    are the neccesary parts hard to come by?
    Or outragously expensive?
    Has anyone here done this?
    Would a guy be better off just building another 455 with the oil restrictors and bigger oil pan etc. required to solve the problems of the 455 ?

    GO w/ the bbc the switch is not hard. The dirveline will work sometimes, if not it not that pricey. If you do not want to do the work just buy my boat.

    Hey Tim!
    The changeover is pretty basic I think. Your new setup would need a new mount system since the olds/chevy mounts are different. If you've got a three point mount system you'll need a new bellhousing as well. Maybe an adapter and move the motor forward some.
    The splines on the H-bar probably won't match either so you'll need one of those.
    With your experience and access to machines you could probably make yourself a 4 point system. Do research on driveline alignment.
    The wiring is the same.
    Consider the cost of all new "bolt ons" when making your decision.
    Is your setup givin you trouble or ya just wanna upgrade?
    Do you want considerably more hp or just a fresh mill?
    Plenty of 455's out there that kick ass.

    Years ago I ran a 455 with restricters and a bigger pan and never had any oil problems. Switching to the chevy would be nice, but you would also need a new exhaust.

    Slash/ intake/ starter/ water pump blockoff/ alternator/ starter/ fuel pump/ pan and on and on and on and on.......................

    Alternator?
    Technically you could use the same starter. Possibly. GM has 2 starters. The Chevy has longer shaft to support more windings hence hi-torque starter.
    Check ebay. There are always Chevy parts for sale on there for jets.

    Hey Sidewound, how's it going?
    I'm actually asking this question because one of my friends is faced with the delimma of whether to do the change-over or build another 455.
    It sounds to me like he would be $$ ahead to go with the 455.

    I made the swap from a 455 to a small block 400 450+hp and gained 6 mph the small block is the same as the big block. I have the drive line, bassett headers, and a four point motor mount all for sale if you would be interested

    That is a small block chevy, I used the same wiring and alternator.
