Thread: Battery Recommendations?

    Coach
My batteries are both shot and I need to replace them before my spring break trip. I just wanted to know what you like and what you might recommend. I run a dual set up now. My stereo runs about 400 watts of power, and I run it most of the day, but will need the alt to do most of the work charging it back up. I leave my boat in the water so it is hard to put a charger on it.

Optima deep cycles (light grey case). Either the blue tops or the yellow tops. They are the same battery internally but the blue tops have the wing nut marine battery cable connections. But the Blue tops are more $$$. Costco has them for $142 each for the blues.

You can also run 6 Volts. Froggy is the man when it comes to these batteries. They are cheaper and have 3 times the amp hours as most others out there today. Here is a pic of the set up I just finished. 6 Trojan T-105's, $59 each. They wired 2 6V in 1 12 V. Each 12 V has 225 Amp hours. I have a total of 675 amp hours just for the stereo.

Here is the pic. Not the best looking things, but you cant beat the price and power.

That is a good price for blue tops. Is that for the starting battery or deep cycle? The deep cycles are usually around $140-160 (but worth it IMHO)

Would you guys run one of the Optimas or two of the Trojans like mentioned above. Seems to me like the two Trojans would be the best bet. Also, would the isolator or battery switch be the best bet for keeping the batteries charged. Last year we ran a switch in the old boat, but we had access to shore power and we won't this year.
    Thanks,
    Dan

Not sure . It sounds like it might be for the starting one. The salesman told me not to waste my money on the blue tops. Since the boat will be stored in Havasu the heat will kill the battery in a year or two. He recommended I buy his regular 12inch deep cycle for $44.00. They will last about the same amount of time in the heat. The boat will have a 800 watt 2 amp stereo. So what do you think? 3 regulars or two blue tops?
