Rocket, its very common to have to shim a GM starter, but be sure your "new" starter is a reverse drive starter.
anyone know whats wrong? from brand new my top mount starter didn't work right (sbc) I have to try 3 or 4 times before it turns over. It sound like the bendix engages with the ring gear , making a ching noise ( not a click noise)and that's it. All I can think of is the gear clearance is to tight. Thanks

it is
The best thing to do if you have access to your old starter is to change out the head and put it on your new starter, if it went away as a core, just ask at any parts store for a couple GM starter shims they will move the starter gear away from the flywheel, if that does not get it done, I have had to take a grinder and remove material from between the two bolt holes where the starter faces the block, hope it helps.....
