The cast pistons may hold up at 5K but you would be miles ahead if you ran forged pistons. I ran a stock 429 in a flat for a short time and spun it to 5800 many times but when I pulled the engine out and dropped the pan there was a couple of pieces of piston skirt in the pan.

For a jetboat engine that isn't going to be spun over 5K-5500 I would recommend Speed-Pro, the weight is close to a stock piston, they are reasonably cheap and are plenty strong enough to handle anything you can throw at it. The premium pistons are light weight and are prob. overkill for your engine. You'll only need to be concerned about piston weight when you get into the 6500-7000 rpm range. Try Summit part number: TRW-L2366-F60 [flat top/429] latest price I have is $319.60

You say that you broke the top of the piston.
Did it break above the top ring?
If so I would say that whoever put the engine togeather got the ring end gap too tight and it stuck the rings and this broke the pistons.
