I had a 77 cvx 18. For all you carlson guys that haven't replaced your flooring the flotation foam under the floor weighs about 200 pounds by now. Boy was that boat fun. When I sold it top speed was in the low 90's. Boat rode like it was on rails. Real screamer.
I have another question regarding rpm and the jet pump... with my 10.5:1 429 and hydralic cam ( that is not over .500 lift) I am expecting about 420-465 hp at or around 5400 rpm . Can anyone tell me if that is too much for an A impeller?? I was hoping to not take the pump apart this year( as I have repaired or replaced everything else http://free.***boat.net/ubb/biggrin.gif)... are there any tell-tale signs the the pump is worn out? visually the impeller seems to be in pretty good shape no real big hacks or scars but, can I tell anything more without taking it apart or a water test to see if it is spinning out??( this boat has been out of the water for about 5 years!!)
the floor and fuelcell mount are done!! now I am on to the engine bay to replace all the plywood there too!!
starting to really hate fiberglass http://free.***boat.net/ubb/tongue.gif quig.

Quig,it sounds like your pump may be a little loose.Last year my 460 was spinning an A impeller 5000.The motor had dish pistons with ported dove heads, comp 292cam and 750dpcarb.From previous posts i have gathered it would take well over 500 ponies to turn a A impeller 5400RPM.Just my 2pennies worth.
Quig - Long story Bought the boat with stock FORD 302 power 188 hp-top speed was 51 mph. Boat wouldn't get on plane with 4 people on board without everyone up at the dash. Many years and many motor mods. Finally created enough hp to grenade a 2 bolt 302 so I built a bulletproof BOSS 302 producing over 500 hp. You name it that engine had it. Fuel injected 11 1/2 to 1 comp. FULLY BLUE PRINTED. After market heads worked over. Custom built through transom headers. Removed 200lb (flotation foam) installed full lenght stringers and new floor. Replaced wood on transom and raised X dimension 2 1/2 inches. Then installed ALPHA SS DRIVE that is 2 1/2 inches shorter than stock. This puts the prop shaft 3 inches below the bottom of the boat. The boat ran absolutly flat at speed - it needed almost no trim. At top speed the wake was only about 16 inches wide right behind the boat. Also took the hook out of the bottom and blueprinted the bottom while I was at it. The last straw was the new set of headers with 2 inch primarys and 4 inch collectors against the header builders suggestion. WOW what a change. Blew the alpha ss drive two weekends in a row. Bought 25 checkmate 251 And the story continues.
