If it's any newer than '73 it should have the Hull ID Number in the upper left area of the transom. It looks like it's been painted/worked over a few times, but the number should still be there.
If it looks like it was gouged out, sanded over, or heavily bondo-ed in that area, then you might be looking at a stolen boat.
Take a strong flashlight or spot light and put it right up against that area from the inside, and see how much transparency is (or isn't) in that area.
If the hull is pretty translucent every where but there, then the HIN has definitely been removed or doctored. That = Stolen. Not the kind of "HOT" Boat to have.
'72 or earlier, probably won't have a number.
