I remember when i did my first small block chevy they were readily availible at the ecology or pick a part for cheap these days they are harder to find them.
I use to look for 69-70 yr model cars to yank them from prefered one with flat top pistons and 64cc heads(i forgot the casting numbers on those)got lucky and found 4 bolt blocks too.
basically take them home tear down and freshen them up i went thru a couple before i learned how to build them right but got it after the third try
Back then a common build was 234-244 duration @.050 lift and 510 lift cam, good dual plane and 650 carb. Its been about 15 years since i have done a small block but have 2 87 and up blocks in garage right now in case i decide to do another which i can use in my open bow boat but will probably do a mild 383
Low budget with good power + more potential is long block out of crashed '96+ Chev 1500 trucks. Vortec heads and factory roller cam set-up. BTW: the 3500's vortec heads have different valve seats (for heavy duty use) that cut down the power some.
With carb it is 280-300hp with no other changes. Really easy to do a bigger cam swap. If over .460 lift then low $$ machine work necessary to add better lift capabilites.
This motor with Ed rpm, 650 carb, and headers is just a cam/springs/minor machine work away from 400hp.
