I do run Lucas Upper Cylinder Lubricant and Fuel Injector Cleaner @ 3oz/10gallons in the boat though....and the truck.

You will lose more then money by running higher then 87 octane. You will lose performance as well. When you start your boat the computer advances timing until it sees knock. If you run 89 and 91 there is a good possibility the computer will not see any knock and will cause the engine to run in limp mode.

Haven't had the limp mode problem, but it does seem to run rich by all of the black crap on the transom by the end of the weekend.

I have an HO in my boat and only run 87. I have tried 89 and 91 and the boat runs no different.

Anyone know what merc recommended for a stock 454 mag (carb'd) Gen V? Bought the boat used and cant find the original documentation. Prev owner said he always ran 91. Would rather run 87 if it is better for the motor and cheaper.

You can check it on the merc web-site. Looks like they recomend 87 for all the 496's naturally aspirated or EFI.

It's low compression, has EFI and DIS. It would probably run fine on 85! 87 is all I run. Mine's an HO.
