Well some a**hole burned it to the ground. The end to a long era. A landmark on Rice Road for years. We need to start a new tree.

I wonder if we should get a drought resistant tree, seeing as how it is in the desert...Does anyone know what type of tree was there before?

I guess I could explain the situation to the Nursery and see what they would recommend.

During the summer I know it would get water at least every weekend. People from the boards would totally water it.

I think the shoe tree is (was) a Joshua Tree (not positive), native to the area. I wouldn't plant a city type tree out there, probably wouldn't survive. Perhaps there's another Joshua Tree out there you guys could just adopt.... ?

Honestly, that was the best part of going to the river/havasu. It was always the part of the trip that told me I was almost there. I would love to find out who would be so stupid or ignorant to do such a thing. :( ((RIP, THE RICE ROAD SHOE TREE!!)) :frown:

The shoe tree is or was a Joshua tree. Joshua trees are considered to be endangered and some very strict laws protecting the replanting or relocation of them. Digging one up and replanting if caught could result in a VERY hefty fine and I believe possible jail time.
Instead of trying to replant or replace the shoe tree your best bet would be to find a simialr tree along the road and start shoeing it up. Maybe you wont find one as big as that one but you will still find one that is capable of being covered. A Joshua tree the size of the shoe tree is well over 100 years old and probably has an enormously deep root system that you would never be able to dig up.

The tree was burned last year in almost the exact same manner, if not worse. The tree structure remained and everyone has been redecorating it over the past year and assume will do the same now.
It is pretty lousy the way people get their kicks some times.

The shoe tree was just clinging to life it had very little green leaves the first time it was torched last year. The first burring killed the tree and it would only be a matter of time before it fell due to the weight it carried. This tree was a subject of one of Huell Howsers video logs as one of the trees to visit in california. To my best estimation this tree was a old mesquite but here is a link with information on Joshua trees http://www.desertusa.com/jtree/josh_month.html
This site sells Joshua tree seeds.
a great loss.

We need some god iron worker to erect a new permanent shoe tree. The fire loading that would be placed on a new tree would be a death sentence for it too. There are just too many idiots in this world. Mature trees can usuallly survive a fire that burns through, but not with that fire load that was placed on it.

Sorry to tell you but some idiot did the damage last year, over Labor Day weekend as I recall. There was a thread at that time. It has not grown an inch since.
I imagine some work of a gangsta.

It's about 2' tall, I was too pissed to stop & take a pic on Fri. There are other trees on that streach of road, just no place to pull over.
I like the plan for a steel one. I'll pitch in a grand to catch the a** holes also.

maybe we need to start with a 2" (or bigger) pipe in the ground, with a threaded end.................keep in mind that threaded pipe should alwany be used so that the tree can "grow"........as the tree gets bigger a "new branch" can be added...............
maybe just a dumb idea but you never know............

I like that idea. We would need someone to pour a good footing for the support pipe though. I also think it needs to be at the same site as the original shoe tree as a memorial.

Flying Tiger

I passed by it Thursday morning at 1:14 AM.
It was fully engulfed in flames,, looked like it was just set,, the shoes were mostly still intact, though burning, looked the fire was just set.
Easily a 50 foot diameter fire ring around it too.
The only vehicle that I saw that may be responsible was a 28' brown class a moho.
It was a quiet night on Rice rd.
Any attempts to replace it will probably be burned by the same a holes.

I have to admit that when we drove by we were shocked. I thought maybe we were looking at the wrong tree. I grew up passing that tree and it was always the first thing we pointed out to friends that were new to the river. It truly is only a couple of feet high and that is it...I just don't understand why people behave the way they do. What did that possibly prove? I swear I am on the wrong planet.......:frown:
