I saw a boat being towed on the 5 freeway yesterday around 6PM - big red lettering on the sides, "Crackerjack" - it had the motor up front and the driver sits behind it. Looked to be "small" (under 20') - I'm wondering what kind of boat it is and type of racing? (owner on here?)

Old crackerboxs are sweet.
I used to watch the crackerboxs at Marine Stadium. Those were the days.

Those boats porpoise like a sun of a b*tch. Cool nostalgia boats though.

Dan, The Cracker Box class is the oldest class in the APBA. 14' with small blocks up front. No trim control and the fast guys run right around 100 or so.
You should come down to Long Beach and watch them and the other inboards run.

Some of the best wildest racing, high flying ever. Requires co-pilot to preserve the old spotter days. Still circuit race today. Patterson is one of the better known hull mfg's. Started out with old flathead ford motors and progressed upward to 90-100 mph straight away's, in severe chop and the wildest ride you will see.
Starts are running clock while boats are running lap's to a visual gaint clock and the "0' second gun. Starts and first laps are awesome.
You will stand during the race "its that good". Some will take the tight turn inside while others will run shallow shore line and take the wide high speed turn looking for the good water. Its flatbottom racing at its best and the preservation of the old still making the great show of today.

Anybody remember the cracker that had the crank on the strut? Co-driver would crank and change the strut angle to change the set. Didn'tlast to long if I remember right.

If it is the same boat the owner lives on the street where I have a house in Huntington Beach. Used to always see him out working on the Crackerjack boat all the time. It was a very sweet ride.

I used to live in Long Beach and was down there all the time but I never actually went to the races (lots of skiing stuff going on there as I recall).
That's the kind of boat that I saw - thanks for teaching me about them - it's a bit hard to imagine running in one of them at 100 MPH but I have no doublt they'll do that
