My experience this weekend made me love Ultra even more. It's the little things that count. We picked up the boat at storage in Needles, gassed up in Bullhead and went about 10 miles to the hotel in Laughlin. We get there and discover one of my trailer tires blew out. Freakin tread separation on my carlisle trail america's. I'm gonna have to talk with them about that... anyways I am in luck because Ultra includes a spare tire in the price of the boat. Don't even have to ask. I know people with other manufacturers, one being Eliminator and they have no spare tire. Costs extra. Needless to say, the unexpected happens as this is a new boat this year. Maybe like the 6th time I've had it out. If I didn't have a spare I would have been screwed.
Next part to the saga. I am prepared because I have all my tools but apparently not prepared enough. My jack wouldn't lift the trailer and I didn't have the right kind of wrench to get the lug nuts off. I call AAA and they won't do it for free because I didn't get the RV package for 20 bucks extra. Just when I am getting ready to pay well over 100 bucks for a stinking tire change at midnight I remember Hey my Progressive boat insurance gives roadside assistance included at no extra cost in the policy. Half hour later my tire is changed and I'm going to sleep to prepare for the morning on mojave on my beautiful Ultra.
Thanks John W, John D and Bob and Thanks Progressive.

blow outs suck.I dont think many people are prepared for them either. On my way to powell last month i got one in baker. My first thought i dont think i have a lug wrench for the trailer.Cousin says he has triple a.I say it might take too long and we want to get to vegas..We get the jack for the truck it worksI had a 13/16th spark plug socket in a tool kit i have and a 3/8 ratchet.Got all but one lug nut loose.try the lug wrench that comes with the truck not a tight fit but it got the job done. Now i need to get a lug wrench that will work with most lugs since i also haul a toyhauler in the winter and a jack that will work for that if needed.(I am glad my chevy came with gloves for changing the tires) :) Ended up a 10 min stop in 110 degree heat

I have heard this story a 100 times. Get rid of the Carlisles and you'll never have another problem. John will totaly take care of you, even tho its not really his responsibility, the tires just suck. My tires and wheels that are on my trailer now will not fit a spare in that area. So I carry a factory tire set-up there so when I see someone on the road with a blowout I can swap it out for them. Three times so far...always a Carlisle tire.

Let me guess, it was on an Extreme trailer. Why a top notch builder continues to use the Carlisle's is beyond me. I had nothing but problems on my Extreme with Carlisle's.

If you are looking to replace your trailer tires, Denman Tires make some really nice tires.

Beyond you? Tom uses those tires because they cost him almost NOTHING!

I don't understand why Extreme keep's putting these junk tires on there trailers. I know I have my fingers crossed when I tow my boat across the hot desert. I questioned the Carlisle tires on my Extreme when I bought my Ultra last year and I was told the problem with Carlisle tires was taken care of. It sure does not sound like it to me. This is the second problem I have heard of on a new set of Carlisle tires on an Extreme trailer in the last month.
Looks like I'll be wasting some money on a new set of tires for my trailer. So, I can have some peace of mind when I'm towing my boat back and forth to the river.
I wish the decision makers at Extreme would pull there head out of there ass and put better tires on there trailers.

Looks like I'll be calling Ultra in the morning. See the service I get. It doesn't surprise me from these guys though. I will take my chances and save my money on a new set as when the condo is done I will be down the street from the launch ramps in Havasu. :) Not too far and low speeds :)

I'd consider yourself very lucky. I won't ever run any set of tires for more than 3 seasons. Nothings worse than having to change a tire in the 100+ degree weather on the side of the freeway.

It's not about the distance or speed, it's about the HEAT. I just finished replacing my 3rd, 4th, and 5th Carlisles. Last year a bubble on the sidewall popped. Earlier this summer I had another bubble and then on another trip a tread separation/blowout and then a sidewall bubble again. That's 4 bad out of the original 5 so i finally got Carlisle to replace the 5th without it actually going bad yet (was only a matter of time.)
Oh yeah, all this happened without towing more than 5-10 miles per day. My boat is stored in Bullhead and I launch on Mohave. I only tow from the casinos to the lake and I lost 4 out of 5!

From what I have heard you need to keep those tires at the exact pressure they state on the tire and tow at 55. I just don't think those two ideas go together. Especially the towing at 55.

For the peeps that keep their boats in storage and only tow a few miles, do you check the pressure each time you take the boat out? I stored my old boat in Havi and even though I towed about two miles, I still checked them everytime. Just a little preventative maintenance. Oh yea, I went through a few Carlisles (as well as a trailer fender) myself :burningm:

So yesterday morning John D. calls me before I can call Ultra and tells me I can go directly to Extreme or he can take care of it if I prefer. As it was probably quicker and not Ultra's fault I went to extreme today and they replaced it. It seems they were a tad hesitant at first and when I said they were new and that Ultra sent me then 5 minutes later I was driving away with a new complete tire and rim in my trunk. New j-hooks too for mounting to spare tire rack. The stripped those things out when they installed them. Anyways, as always fantastic service from Ultra. Thanks guys.
Drove by the new Corona dealership today on the way to a customer site but since I was on the clock and busy I couldn't stop in. I will definately go when it's done in a few days though. It looks really nice from the outside and is right next to the freeway. I hope it helps them sell a lot more boats. I wonder if Caliber1 is scared having them right next door...

So, did they just replace it wit another Carlisle? If so, what can you expect in the future?

Yeah same exact tire and rim. Hopefully I can expect that I just got the bad one in the bunch but from other posts on this thread and others I don't know... As I said before I hope since my place in Havasu will be very close to the launch ramp (Kiowa and Havi blvd) and I'm anal and will check my tire pressure then I won't have a problem (although this happened between bullhead and laughlin). If it does go I will just change it and deal with it again. I may be hardheaded but I refuse to pay to replace 5 brand new tires. If it blows I will not be going more than probably 35-40 and will not lose control. Just change it or call Progressive and be on with my day.

no kidding. I insisted on radials. I have done this for too many years to go with junk-ass tires.
If my new one would have Carlisle's I would have just laughed at them and told them to change it. You would be surprised how fast a salesman will move on your demands if you hold the contract in your hand, UNSIGNED. :D
good bit of advice too. Make sure you have the right wrench and jack. I noticed that I had the wrong ones when I went to check it.

New Ultra delivered this year on an Extreme trailer and I had 2 blowouts :jawdrop: on the way to Havasu on Friday night at two different locations - some of you may have seen the sparks, or saw me limping into Vidal Junction with only 3 tires on my boat and the emergency flashers going. I had to have AAA deliver a tire and wheel so I could make it into town. I'm scared to bring the boat home - I left it in Havasu. I sent an e-mail to Steve/John West for advice since it's Extreme, not Ultra's responsibility - I know they will take care of me, but I don't want Extreme to replace the itres with the same substandard tires What brands of tires are best for trailering a 24' boat?

I've had good luck with Maxxis tires on my trailers. They make a radial tire that is meant for trailers. I also have heard people speak highly about Goodyear Marathon tires but I have no experience with them.
I will soon be replacing my Carlisle tires on my trailer soon. So, I don't have any problems on my way to or from the river.

My jack wouldn't lift the trailer.
Thats when you look for crap on the side of the road and make your own jack!

Thats a good story though, Ultra makes a nice boat and I have Progressive too and have nothing but good to say about them.

I know I'm quoting myself here, but all is good with the world - John at Ultra called Extreme - they are going to fix me up - it appears the valve stems may have been at fault, I'll know more lately - anyhow, in true Ultra style (and Extreme in this case), customer service reigns. Thanks guys. :mix:

Thats great. Glad to hear Ultra and Extreme are taking care of you. But I never had any doubt John would not take care of you. I believe he does his best to make sure all of us Ultra owners are satisfied. Way to go John.
